Kristy F. Fleming, MD, FAAD

BOARD-CERTIFIED DERMATOLOGIST AND MOHS SURGEON

Kristy F. Fleming, MD, FAADDr. Kristy Fleming is a native of Southern California. She grew up in Huntington Beach, the daughter of a surfboard airbrush artist and the youngest of three girls. As soon as she was old enough, she joined her father in the surfboard factory where she learned about the subtle nuances of color and shading to enhance contours and create the optical illusion of depth.

As much as she loved art, Dr. Fleming found her true passion in science. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of San Francisco where she studied art, in particular the female form, but majored in molecular biology, with a minor in biochemistry. From there, Dr. Fleming attended the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine, where she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, a medical honor society reserved for the top 5% of the class. She was immediately drawn to the field of dermatology, an organic fit for her artistic nature and background in molecular biology. After completing her residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, a top ten institution for dermatology, she joined UCLA Dermatology as a clinical professor, treating patients and helping teach dermatology residents and medical students.

Dr. Fleming has been working in private practice in Newport Beach for the past five years. She has a successful practice in Fashion Island at the Skin Cancer and Reconstructive Surgery Center, where she practices medical and cosmetic dermatology, and performs Mohs surgery for the treatment of skin cancer.

Dr. Fleming is now very excited to announce she has opened a brand new office in Laguna Hills: Coastal Hills Dermatology and Plastic Surgery.

“It’s our second location, but our primary focus.” Dr. Fleming says, “Our mission is to provide exceptional care, help our patients achieve and maintain healthy skin for a lifetime, and give our patients the ability to age gracefully and confidently.”

RAMDY ROSE, NBC, HIS

Rose Hearing Aid CentersRandy Rose of Rose Hearing Aid Centers has spent nearly 36 years helping the hearing impaired hear and understand speech better. Randy set a new national standard for patient satisfaction by establishing best practices, an accredited ISO 9000 that has consistently offered superior results in customer service.

The hearing impaired industry has changed significantly since Randy has been treating patients. The technology has improved, the quality has been enhanced and his patients have never been more satisfied with the results the new hearing aid systems are able to provide.

It’s better to address hearing loss sooner rather than later. Your brain is responsible for processing everything you hear and needs accurate sound from both ears. When you choose to ignore your hearing loss, you deprive your brain of stimulation which may cause cognitive problems. The faster you seek help, the better your results will be. Improved hearing allows the brain to work optimally and patients tend to be much happier.

There have also been great improvements for those who suffer from Tinnitus. Tinnitus is the constant or periodic ringing, humming, or buzzing in one’s ears. There are an estimated 50 million Americans who experience Tinnitus. Fortunately, Rose Hearing Aid Centers now offers management tools to help those who suffer from this distressing condition.

There are four types of hearing loss:

  • Conductive Hearing Loss:
Usually a temporary loss that can be fixed with medication, a short procedure, or on rare occasions, surgery.
  • Sensorineural Hearing Loss:
Caused when tiny hairs in the cochlea are missing or damaged and the only non-surgical solution is to be fit with hearing aids.
  • Mixed Hearing Loss:
A combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss that is usually treated with hearing aids alone, and occasionally in conjunction with medication, a short procedure or with surgery.
  • Central Hearing Loss:
Often caused by strokes and central nerve diseases. This type of hearing loss usually involves a therapy called auditory rehabilitation.

Hearing tests are fun, easy, and quick. Call Rose Hearing Aid Centers today for your free hearing evaluation.

Indeed, Dr. West’s patients report feeling better, sleeping better, losing unwanted weight, increasing mental clarity and energy, and handling depression and lethargy. “I have even had patients tell me, ‘You saved my marriage!’ ”

Cold Rush Wellness

Cold Rush Wellness

Scott Young, D.C.

Cold Rush WellnessDr. Scott Young was the first holistic practitioner in Orange County to offer both Whole Body Cryotherapy and Local Cryotherapy. Specializing in sports injuries, he especially enjoys working with high school athletes to provide them treatments that were previously only available to professional athletes.

Cryostimulation has multiple health benefits and has been shown to greatly speed the recovery of sprains and strains as well as other sports-related injuries. The treatments are very tolerable and patients leave Cold Rush Wellness feeling relief and usually very relaxed as well. Dr. Young is a firm believer that only physicians should be operating these types of Cryotherapy facilities as Cryosaunas and Local Cryotherapy machines are powerful medical devices.

When a patient is stimulated with extremely low temperatures, their body responds in 3 fundamental ways: a vascular change occurs within the skin which constricts and pushes blood towards the vital organs which replenish them with enzymes and oxygen. In addition, a hormonal and neurological stimulation occurs. Cold receptors in the skin communicate with the brain to put the body in “fight or flight” mode. This causes the adrenal glands to work and send norepinephrine throughout the body and causes other hormones to change as well. Serotonin increases, putting the mind in a euphoric state. Testosterone increases and the stress hormone cortisol decreases at the same time. Finally, a cellular change occurs. The extreme cold exposure increases a specific enzyme needed to fuel the energy center of each and every cell in the body. When cells become energized in this way, they create more anti-inflammatory proteins which aid in reducing inflammation throughout the body.

This evolutionary treatment is groundbreaking as it unleashes the inner doctor in every one of us to heal and recover at an accelerated rate. Now that we can all receive the health benefits from this treatment, give Cold Rush Wellness a call to learn more and to make your appointment with Dr. Young today.

Aloha Foot & Ankle

Aloha Foot & Ankle

THE ART OF BUNION CORRECTION

Aloha Foot & AnkleA common foot problem facing the population is the bunion. This deformity serves as a good example of why comprehensive planning, execution and follow through by a trained and experienced specialist surgeon is important to a good outcome. Aloha Foot & Ankle starts with patient selection. Candidates must be healthy enough, motivated, and have appropriate expectations for their operation. In bunion surgery, bone angles, joint quality and arch stability are key variables in decision making for each individual patient.

The Aloha doctors typically perform this procedure with a local anesthetic and intravenous sedation in the outpatient surgical center setting. They utilize small incisions on the side of the foot with plastic closure so that the scar doesn’t show. Preemptive nerve blocks allow patients to recover typically with minimal or no pain, and the combination of ice and intermittent compression reduces swelling and minimizes other risks. Dr. Cachia states, ”Bunion surgery is truly a blend of art and science. While cosmetic appearance is very important and attention to every detail is critical, foot function is equally important and attention to the mechanics and geometry of the final result is paramount to a successful outcome.”

The Aloha Team begins with a complete history and appropriate physical exam, diagnostic imaging and discussion of alternatives. Ultimately, a plan is formulated, explained, and completed. Patients become partners in their recovery and their result, so every effort is made to encourage patient compliance through patient education.

The philosophy of patient care at Aloha Foot and Ankle Associates allows Dr. Victor Cachia and Dr. Visoth Chan to explore many different treatment alternatives for individual patients so that the most effective treatment can be administered while keeping risk at a minimum. Dr.’s Chan and Cachia prefer to approach patient care from the patient’s perspective, as well as drawing from decades of combined education, training and experience. The doctors know that while some patients require surgery to treat their foot and ankle conditions, many problems can be solved quickly and effectively with conservative means. Non-surgical methods may include footwear modifications, bracing, orthoses, physical medicine, class IV laser therapy, radial shock wave, Proliferative, PRP and stem cell therapy and medication or immobilization. Other patients require, and may benefit most, from surgical correction.

MemorialCare Medical Group & Urgent Care

MemorialCare Medical Group & Urgent Care

MemorialCare Medical Group & Urgent Care

By Veronica Bradzey

MemorialCare Medical Group & Urgent CareFor 20 years, MemorialCare Medical Group and Urgent Care has been an integral part of San Juan Capistrano and its surrounding communities, providing outpatient services to thousands in Orange County and beyond. Marking the one-year anniversary in its new location on Rancho Viejo Road, local residents also have cause to celebrate their access to premier patient care — 365 days a year — at this beautiful, one-stop-shop health center.

When MemorialCare Medical Group moved into its newly constructed, 25,000 square foot building last year, the doctors and staff were excited to offer the highest level of care, with the added convenience of an ultra-modern, well-equipped health center.

“One of the great things about working in this office,” says Ian Bare, MD, Medical Director of MemorialCare Medical Group Urgent Care, “is that we’re not some little office on an island. As a member of MemorialCare Health System, we are connected to a broad medical community, giving us the ability to provide comprehensive rather than episodic care.”

The office staff includes dedicated urgent care physicians, primary care physicians specializing in family practice, internal medicine and pediatrics; plus an onsite podiatrist, pulmonologist, palliative specialist, and a Coumadin Clinic.

“It comes down to giving people what they need, right then and there,” says Dr. Bare, “whether it’s a Kleenex and cough medicine, or it’s stabilizing them and calling an ambulance.” Being part of MemorialCare Health System makes this level of care possible, connecting patients, doctors, imaging centers, hospitals, and specialists through its Electronic Medical Records System (EMR).

The advantages and opportunities that are recognized from the EMR allow providers to deliver patient-centered coordinated care. The EMR enables doctors to instantly share patients’ medical history, hospital notes, imaging notes and specialist consultations so that all providers are on the same page. Whether a patient comes in with a dislocated finger or chest pains, any doctor they see will have immediate access to their full medical history within the MemorialCare Health System.

Along with an incredibly friendly team and caring, highly-qualified doctors and nurses, the office boasts a wide array of advanced equipment, allowing most procedures to be completed in-house. Accessibility to a full-time laboratory, ultrasound, an EKG machine, cardiac monitoring, dedicated procedure rooms with surgical equipment, point of care testing for glucose, hemoglobin and urine studies, and IVs for medications and fluids enhances treatment and delivery of optimal results.

“We try to be ready for anything that’s reasonable to do in an outpatient setting,” Dr. Bare says. And for anything they can’t handle in-house? “We’re backed by the entire MemorialCare Health System,” adds Bare.  If a patient comes in with a condition that requires a fully-equipped hospital, the health care team calls Saddleback Memorial ahead to make arrangements for the patient before their arrival, apprising the caregivers of the situation through the EMR.

Popular amenities offered at the health center include free Wi-Fi, a health education center, a private consultation room, and a drive-up outpatient drop-off area where patients can call for assistance when entering or leaving the facility.

MemorialCare Medical Group is active in the community, sponsoring events such as the Sports Physical Workshop at San Juan Hills High School, where Urgent Care doctors perform 600-700 sports physicals in one afternoon. Many of the Primary Care doctors present health-related seminars at businesses and community centers throughout Orange County.

“Most of all, we want you to realize that we’re here for you,” Dr. Bare says. “Even if it’s just that you’re concerned and don’t know what to do, we’re happy to see you and get you on the right track.”
