The Lobster Shack

The Lobster Shack

San Clemente

by Dina Scaglione

Once upon a time, a ten-year-old boy from Venice Beach set out on a bonding trip with his father to the East Coast. This innocuous road trip became the stuff dreams are made of, a jaunt that introduced a young boy to lobster rolls, and planted a seed that grew into what is now The Lobster Shack. Most of us can recall those palpable moments that define our life’s calling. Moments frozen in time where we remember every smell, every taste. That’s the impetus for The Lobster Shack, the newest eatery in Old Town San Clemente that adds west coast flair to quintessential east coast fare.

New England transplants will be pleasantly surprised by brioche so light and lobster so sweet, they’ll swear they’re back in Cape Cod. The Lobster Shack’s brioche rolls are baked fresh daily with flour imported from back east to give it a light, airy texture. Fresh fish is flown in daily, mostly from the East Coast; nothing is ever frozen or reheated. Seafood is generously layered, without heavy, fussy dressing to over-complicate the experience. Your choice of chunky lobster, succulent crab or flavorful shrimp is piled high and held together with a light lemon butter aioli sauce. Share the ‘Trio for Two” where you can experience all three savory staples in a marriage of perfection — served with your choice of two sides: Blue Cheese Cole Slaw, New England Baked Beans, or Cape Cod Kettle Chips. Start your meal off with a cup of house-made Clam Chowder or Lobster Bisque, piping hot and richly flavored.

“Think globally and support locally” is owner Dan Naughton’s mission for The Lobster Shack. As a big believer in supporting the local community and preserving our oceans, anything left over at the end of the day is donated to a local food bank that feeds those in need. In his commitment to sustainable cooking methods, Dan abides by the United Nation’s sustainable development plan to reduce his global footprint and only sources from fisheries that adhere to the FAO’s Code of Conduct for Responsible Fishing.

Open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Lobster Shack delivers an experience you don’t often find in South OC and gladly one you won’t soon forget. Mention The Local DISH Magazine when you stop in and take $2.00 off your lobster roll.

Big West BPA Baseball

Big West BPA Baseball

OC‘s Premier Baseball Camps & Club Teams

by Rebecca Parsons

Justin Bray hadn’t planned on starting a baseball club, but in the spring of 2016, his friend and local coach Greg Fielis of the Seadogs/Stars & Stripes (now currently part of Big West) needed help managing a few south Orange County teams and Bray was the man for the job. What began as a fun project to help out a buddy quickly turned into an extensive commitment to a travel baseball program. With investment in time and money, Bray eventually ventured out on his own with Big West, allowing him more control over his vision. In the summer of 2018, Big West merged with Jared Sandler of BPA Baseball, becoming Big West BPA.

Big West had always focused on youth baseball, while Sandler’s program was geared toward college development and placement. The merge has created a natural synergy, blending Big West’s roster of 200 plus youth players and BPA’s program where kids can train and elevate their game well into their teenage years and beyond. Although it’s still in early innings, the partnership has proven to be a winning combination.

What Makes Big West BPA Special?
Big West BPA has become South Orange County’s premier competitive travel baseball organization with a goal to provide professional developmental training and preparation for youth, high school, college, and even professional baseball players. Every year, double-digit numbers of kids, that have gone through BPA’s program, will go on to play college baseball.

The staff is stacked with experienced coaches or “developers” as Bray likes to call them. Guys like Coach Greg Posein (also an MLB scout), Steve Hendricks (ex-pro and ex-coach for numerous MLB teams), and Chris Doyle (who worked with the Texas Rangers) boast impressive track records and have been hand-picked for each age group. BPA’s very own Jared Sandler is also involved with Big West now.

In addition to superstar “developers,” Big West BPA is proud to have a number of experienced and talented coaches on board like Pac Gutierrez (manages the 11U showcase teams), Johnny Garcia (10U Director), and Greg Fielis (10+ years coaching youth baseball).

Throughout the year, Big West BPA offers a number of different programs that cater to a wide age range and skill level, including a train/practice only program called “KliniK,” 1-on-1 private lessons, and engaging and effective camps. Big West BPA is most well-known for its club baseball program, providing athletes with speed/agility/ conditioning classes, batting practice, outdoor field practice, and weekend games.

Big West BPA Summer Camps
During the summer months, Big West BPA provides three weeks of summer camps geared toward players aged 7 to 16. Each four-day camp consists of two indoor and two outdoor field sessions. Indoor training takes place at Big West BPA’s state-of-the-art facility in San Juan Capistrano, complete with ten batting cages, six bullpens, a gym/ weight room, and an open turf area where campers can work on hitting, pitching, and catching. The outdoor component takes place at a baseball field in Laguna Niguel where campers have the opportunity to work on repetition drills and experience live game situations.

Big West BPA’s summer camps are open to kids of all skill levels, from beginners to elite players, with no tryout required. Campers work with top-notch coaches to develop new skills or to hone already existing ones. At the end of the session, select campers will receive a “Golden Ticket” based on their performance during the week, which is a direct invitation to join the travel baseball team program.

Attitude, Effort and Resilience
While Big West BPA promotes a competitive environment, it also focuses on making baseball a fun, bonding experience for athletes, by organizing various clubwide outings and activities. Although striving to succeed is an important goal, there is a heavy emphasis on attitude and effort, which helps development occur more rapidly.

“Baseball is a game of failure; the game will chew you up and spit you out” says Bray. “We teach kids how to overcome adversity, be resilient, and develop to the point where they believe in themselves. That’s why our travel baseball team program is so successful.”

The Camino for Kids

The Camino for Kids

The Camino for KidsFor his 60th birthday, longtime South Orange County resident and renowned concrete artisan, Mark Allen of Stoneface Inc., decided that instead of a relaxing vacation to celebrate his milestone birthday, he was going to take a journey. Mark is slated to walk 540 miles from France to Spain on The Camino de Santiago beginning in June and finishing in mid-July 2019. The Camino de Santiago, meaning the “Way of St. James,” is a large network of ancient pilgrimage routes stretching across Europe and arriving at the tomb of St. James in Santiago de Compostela in Northwest Spain. Many people set out on the Camino for spiritual reasons as they meet other pilgrims, visit historic cathedrals, and discover the large infrastructure of buildings built for pilgrims over the past centuries.

Mark has always had strong ties with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley. He decided he’d turn this adventure into a fundraiser to benefit the many children that depend on the club. You are invited to support Mark on his path. Throughout his journey, Mark will post pictures and video updates, and his family will be sending him motivational messages from the children he is walking for and from those who donate and would like to send him words of encouragement.

To support Mark and his goal to raise $20,000 for the Boys & Girls club, enter the following link into your browser (givsum.com/camino) and click the “sponsorship” button. All proceeds will go directly to The Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley at the time of donation. You can register to sponsor each mile of Mark’s 540-mile journey or you can make an individual contribution. All donations are tax deductible, and you will receive a receipt for tax purposes.

Best of luck to Mark on his pilgrimage as he helps to make a difference for the kids at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley!

PARENTS & KIDS RAVE THAT AA4K IS THE BEST IN THE OC!

BY DINA SCAGLIONE

Acting Academy for KidsThere’s an old adage; necessity is the mother of invention. That certainly rings true when it comes to the creation and evolution of Acting Academy for Kids in Laguna Niguel.

Stephen Zygo, Founder of Acting Academy for Kids (AA4K), always wanted to run a performing arts studio for children. Growing up in a performing arts family, he experienced the powerful effect it has on a child’s burgeoning intellect, their self-esteem and social identity. Small in stature but athletic, Stephen excelled in both sports and theater. With his vocal talent and musical theatre acumen, he quickly discovered he could land more lead roles on stage than win trophies on the field.

It was on stage where Stephen developed a strong sense of self. He could be quirky and funny and try on a variety of personas. He also learned to navigate the array of emotions that accompanied playing a leading role or being a part of an ensemble cast. This spectrum of experiences allowed Stephen to cultivate his ability to lead, educate and equip children and teens with the skills that will prepare them for roles both on and off the stage.

Why Performing Arts for Kids?
Armed with a musical theater background and a passion for education, Stephen spent his early career teaching at St. Mary’s School in Aliso Viejo. Stephen directed the school’s performing arts program, ultimately shaping the lives of hundreds of students. This led Stephen and his wife Maggie to create Acting Academy for Kids in Stephen’s 4th grade classroom.

Soon after, during the down economy of the mid-2000’s, Stephen and his wife found themselves without jobs. They knew, however, that they wanted to create a scalable educational environment that could reach more kids and positively impact families. With diminishing funding for the arts in schools, AA4K began to fill that void by offering affordable performing arts programs to families. “For performing arts to be effective, it has to be fun and engaging for the kids,” shared Stephen. “Our experiential workshops not only shape a child’s self-image, but they’re a lot of fun, too.”

They would eventually partner with a local South Orange County theater, producing a multitude of performing arts programs and summer camps for more than 9 years. In 2017, the Academy spread its wings and opened in three locations; San Clemente, Laguna Niguel and Irvine. It has since trained and inspired over 12,000 students!

What Makes AA4K Different?
While some performing arts academies focus on what it takes to break into Hollywood, AA4K boasts arts education, led by high-quality teachers with expertise in education, the arts, and working with kids. AA4K offers musical theater, vocal lessons, film and TV production classes (AA4K Studios).

“Education is the cornerstone of our performing arts program,” commented Stephen. “I always wanted to have my own space to produce an educational, performance-focused program that would allow kids to have fun, but also help them develop essential life skills.”

AA4K is more than a summer program or an afternoon workshop. The kids that go through AA4K form lifelong relationships and learn the essentials of team building. Some of these kids end up with friendships through the program that last through their teen years and beyond.

Parents Give AA4K a Standing Ovation
“I love AA4K! I love how vibrant and energetic the team is,” said parent Anik Rubalcava.

“The kids learned how to speak in front of large audiences, rehearse and practice. It is great for fostering friendships, learning how to be on a team, and being flexible about taking on various roles.”

“We have two daughters (ages 8 and 7) who have participated in multiple AA4K musical theatre offerings and their experiences have been nothing short of amazing,” commented parent Ryan Vogt- Lowell. “AA4K’s staff members are organized, caring and patient throughout the entire process, and genuinely committed to developing the children’s confidence, self-esteem and team working skills.”

Future AA4K
Look for upcoming spring musicals: Disney’s Frozen and Harry Potter. Plan ahead and sign up early for AA4K’s summer camps which tend to fill up quickly. For more information, visit ActingAcademyForKids.com or call 949.427.0072 (text or leave a voice message).

Expect More from Retirement

Hundreds of older adults in South Orange County will soon have a new place to call home this spring. Reata Glen, the much-anticipated Life Plan Community in the up-and-coming master-planned neighborhood of Rancho Mission Viejo, will host its grand opening on Friday, April 26.

Two years ago, more than 550 workers began construction on the community located at 2 Las Estrellas Loop in Rancho Mission Viejo. From the beginning, Reata Glen’s mission was to provide the highest-quality experience in retirement living.

Just two minutes from downtown San Juan Capistrano, Reata Glen offers 480 residential living homes with more than 20 unique floor plans to meet the needs and desires of today’s seniors looking for quality living options with amenities and wellness services.

Residential options include one-, two- and three-bedroom apartment homes, and two-and three-bedroom villas with attached garages. Every residence comes with a complete kitchen as well as other upscale interior finishes and customization options.

“Older adults are yearning for a location where they can grow, and that’s what Reata Glen will offer every resident,” said Marketing Manager Stephanie Riggs. “We believe there’s a need to educate older adults about senior living options that can enhance their lifestyle while providing peace of mind for their future.”

Since the announcement of the community’s development five years ago, Reata Glen has seen reservations climb quickly for apartments and villas. The high demand has limited the number of available homes, but there are still opportunities to get in on the ground floor.

The 60-acre campus will provide a maintenance-free lifestyle for its 600 residents, who will enjoy vast views of the surrounding hills as they experience an active and engaging lifestyle. Residents will be able to take advantage of more than 200 activities and amenities, including a movie theater, performing arts theater, fitness center and spa, an indoor / outdoor pool, multiple dining venues, billiards and card rooms, gardening areas, and walking and cycling trails with access to San Juan Creek Trail, leading directly to Doheny State Beach.

Recent studies confirm that when people move to a Life Plan Community like Reata Glen, they’re more likely to make new friends and try new things, and most report benefits to their overall health and well-being. As part of its commitment to fostering relationships, Reata Glen will also focus heavily on providing multigenerational opportunities for residents and those living within the Rancho Mission Viejo neighborhood.

With 13 percent of the Orange County population already reaching their senior years and that number expected to double in 20 years, Reata Glen is positioned to meet the lifestyle and wellness needs of this dynamic population,” Riggs noted.

Reata Glen residents will have the comfort of knowing that regardless of their health care needs, they can remain close to their family and friends. As a Life Plan Community, Reata Glen offers residents access to the adjacent health center, including assisted living, memory care, and long-term care in a skilled nursing center, should they ever need it.

“Families have been interested in Reata Glen for more than five years,” said Riggs. “Many of them have driven by, curious to view the completed construction of this new community and lifestyle. We’re all so excited to see Reata Glen open its doors, knowing it will positively impact the lives of generations to come.”

Reata Glen will host an open house event on Friday, April 26, for invited guests. To be added to the invitation list, call 949.545.2200. Other ways to learn more about the community – floor plan options, pricing and location, services and amenities, and more – visit ReataGlen.com or call to schedule an appointment.

Dana Point Festival of Whales

Dana Point Festival of Whales

Dana Point Festival of Whales

Catch the Action at the 48th Annual Festival of Whales

Springtime in Dana Point brings the return of the Dana Point Festival of Whales, the world’s longest running event honoring these amazing creatures of the deep. Traditionally set for the first two weekends in March, this year’s event will run March 2, 3, 9 and 10.

Ask any local; Dana Point is year-round perfection when it comes to whale watching. A wide variety of species are regulars here, but there’s something extra special about this time of year, when California gray whales appear in numbers, using Dana Point’s majestic headlands as a landmark in the longest animal migration on the planet. The grays’ 10,000-mile-plus round trip between their warm breeding and calving waters of Baja Mexico and their cold Arctic feeding waters of the Bering Sea is the “magical migration” that served as the original inspiration for this Festival, nearly half a century ago.

This is a favorite time of year to observe our ocean dwelling cetacean neighbors, living it up in the Pacific waves bounding our beautiful city by the sea. The whales, many with calves at their sides, are a sight to behold with tail flukes slapping, blowholes spouting, sidling up to boats filled with excited onlookers, perhaps as curious about us as we are about them.

The Festival kicks off with a parade and street fair in the downtown area and then continues with four full days of whale watching along with fun, educational, and entertaining activities throughout the Dana Point Harbor. Bring the entire family down for games, music, great food and beautiful artwork.

The Festival of Whales is dedicated to fostering a love and appreciation for cetaceans via entertaining, informative, and cultural experiences that all ages can enjoy. The event is a collaborative production brought to you by the Festival of Whales Foundation—a 501(c)3 charitable organization and in conjunction with other local nonprofit organizations. The Foundation was created to inform, inspire and attract residents of Dana Point and visitors from around the world to learn about the planet’s largest mammals and to realize the importance of protecting and preserving the oceans and all ocean life.

Join the fun at the 48th annual Dana Point Festival of Whales. For more information, visit FestivalofWhales.com and follow the event on Facebook and Instagram @festivalofwhales.

OCWineFest

OCWineFest

An Exploration of Taste

2ND ANNUAL – MARCH 9-10

OCWineFest returns to San Juan Capistrano March 9 and 10, to sip for a cause, bringing top wineries into one location for two days of wine tasting and wine education on the historic grounds of A Stone’s Throw Winery, with many OC-based winemakers, luxe exhibitors and great philanthropic organizations in the mix. All tickets include unlimited tastings and a souvenir glass.

In its second year, OCWineFest, produced in coordination with LAWineFest owner and CEO, Dr. Joel M. Fisher, will be bigger and better, continuing to blaze the trail of bringing wine and people together – from the novice to the aficionado – in an accessible way, balancing fun, exploration and education with wine and beer tastings, food pairings, seminars, and a chance to meet some of the area’s top sommeliers and winemakers. The event will also feature gourmet goodies and luxury products from a variety of vendors.

Tasty eats will be available for purchase from Cousins Maine Lobster, MAIZ Cocina, Nostimo Greek Mediterranean Cuisine, Slammin’ Sliders and The Poke Hut Food Truck. There will be games by King Barrel and dancing to the tunes of the The Shenanigans Band, Three Forks Junction and other live acts.

The spirit of giving will continue through 2019 at OCWineFest, which will raise funds and awareness for three amazing philanthropic organizations — Kids Konnected, the Swanner House Restoration Foundation, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

At its inaugural event in 2018, almost 2,000 guests sipped more than 200 wines and beers from 40 producers, while they mingled, danced, nibbled bites and learned about award-winning wines from certified sommeliers and the winemakers themselves.

Tickets for the 2019 OCWineFest retail for $100 for General Admission and $125 for All Access, (which provides access to the exclusive VIP boutique winery areas). Designated drivers are appreciated, and their tickets cost only $25. Stay tuned for ticket deals by keeping in touch with OCWineFest online and on social media. More info at www.OCWineFest.com.
