Partnering with the Community

by Victoria Kertz

Scott McDonald and Jason Velez believe that a law firm should provide more than just a resolution to your legal issues. The pair founded 1LAW, in San Clemente, to advise Orange County residents on personal injury claims and to give back to the community they love. Goodwill may not be the first thing that comes to mind when considering law firms, but for 1LAW, it’s an integral part of a broader mission.

Since opening doors to their practice in 2014, Scott and Jason have established themselves as advocates who go the extra mile for their clients. The firm’s branded Sprinter van near its Camino de Los Mares office is a visual reminder that driving up to Los Angeles or even Irvine is no longer necessary to receive best-in-class legal services. While 1LAW specializes in personal injury and accident claims, the firm also provides counsel on family, immigration, bankruptcy, and intellectual property matters.

“We share the same values as our clients,” Jason says. “It’s part of what drives me. We believe that a personalized approach translates into better results.” With over 80% of the firm’s business derived from referrals; clients couldn’t agree more. After all, when overwhelmed with the stress and suffering from an accident or injury, an unresponsive lawyer is counterproductive to achieving a positive outcome.

In addition to connecting clients with trusted medical or chiropractic treatment, 1LAW works directly with insurance agencies to prevent delays in reimbursement. One of the firm’s attorneys remains involved with each case throughout the entire process, and the initial consultation is always complimentary. “A lot can go wrong with a personal injury case,” Scott says. “At the end of the day, we look out for our clients until the final resolution.”

This client-first mentality is a cornerstone of Jason and Scott’s business philosophy. In addition, 1LAW’s staff is tasked with familiarizing themselves with the needs and priorities of each client, enabling them to deliver more specialized attention. When all parties are working in unison, it creates an environment where the attorneys are more effective. Clients aren’t simply a case file at 1LAW, they’re neighbors, fellow parents and local business owners who need both empathy and expert legal representation.

1LAW takes the support of local clubs and athletic teams seriously. Since 2014, the firm has sponsored the San Clemente High School Triton softball team. Both Scott and Jason have coached their fair share of youth sports and they believe it’s their responsibility to contribute to the community spirit that makes San Clemente such a special place.

They also understand that accidents don’t always happen during normal business hours and clients have urgent questions or concerns that may keep them awake at night. That’s why 1LAW created an online chat feature, providing clients with 24/7 access to legal support. Jason and Scott launched the Free Legal Chat app on their website in early 2020. Clients, new and existing, have the opportunity to receive legal advice without needing to visit the office and schedule an appointment with an attorney. “Technology can make legal services so much more accessible,” Jason says.

What can 1LAW do for you? Take advantage of a free initial consultation to determine if you have a case. An attorney will provide a realistic, honest assessment of your situation and help you make the best choice in moving forward. Jason and Scott are passionate about making South County a better place to live, one case at a time. As Jason says, “Let us earn your business.”

The Right Guy Real Estate Group

by Simon Guy

Article by Victoria Kertz

The Right Guy Real Estate GroupIt’s a seller’s market and demand for Orange County real estate has reached a fever pitch. Simon Guy, one of the premier agents at Keller Williams OC Coastal Realty, has sold over 500 homes, but he’s never seen a market quite like this. One of Simon’s recent listings attracted 69 showings over a single weekend, received 15 offers, and sold for 10% more than the asking price. Like the last four properties Simon sold, it, too, required no appraisal contingency.

Competition for single family homes is fierce. Record low interest rates, coupled with pandemic demand and remote work opportunities, have created a market imbalance. In Orange County, there are typically 5,000 to 7,000 active listings in any given spring, but current inventory levels are approximately 2,300 – not seen since 2006. The work from anywhere culture is driving millennials and Gen-Xers out of the San Diego and Los Angeles areas toward the laid-back vibe of South OC. With excellent schools, charming beach towns, and safe neighborhoods, it’s a market that Simon, who grew up in Dana Point, knows well. The Dana Hills High School graduate now lives in San Juan Capistrano and works from his office in San Clemente, which provides him with a depth of knowledge about the local area. He realizes that while homes are getting snatched up quickly, today’s market conditions won’t last forever. If you have a property you’ve contemplated selling, there may never be a better time than now.

The first step, Simon says, is to hire a full-time professional. Selling property yourself, or listing it with an inexperienced friend, relative or part-time agent, may translate into unforeseen consequences. Simon warns that a lack of information regarding current legal requirements and best practices can result in long-term issues that might have been prevented. “Real estate has been my focus since I was 18,” said Simon. Since then, he’s become a top-selling, award-winning agent, and has built a customer-centric team who gets the job done right. When you work with Simon, you also have the benefit of five specialists, always available to assist. Simon makes certain his clients receive conciergelevel customer service, regardless of property value. His all-inclusive approach to real estate includes an administration and processing specialist, a sales guru, an expert in lead generation, and an escrow agent.

The team is headed by Simon’s wife Daisy, who in addition to developing gorgeous digital and print marketing for clients, also has the most important job: taking care of their two young sons, John and James. Simon’s signature marketing plan ensures that your property is only featured in its best light and is seen by as many potential buyers as possible.

Even in a white hot market, optimal positioning is essential to attract the most qualified buyers. Simon and his team will develop a comprehensive marketing campaign for your home, with a proven strategy that’s made him one of the most successful realtors in the county. He takes all of the guesswork and research off your plate and completes the entire transaction in a timely, professional manner.

Selling your home is likely the most important financial decision you’ll make. Simon believes in patience during the process; it’s not about taking the first offer, or even one of the first several. In this type of seller’s market, identifying the right offer and advising a client through the negotiation phase into the final closing is best left to an experienced agent.

If you’re looking to sell your home, call Simon Guy of Keller Williams OC Coastal Realty. Your time is now.

Parents & Kids Rave that AA4K is the Best in the OC!

by Val Vanderpool

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced the world into lockdown last spring, Acting Academy for Kids (AA4K) immediately focused on how to safely operate its long-running theater and performing arts programs for kids and teens.

By July of 2020, AA4K co-founders Stephen and Maggie Zygo developed a way to host small, in-person summer camps, enabling students to continue acting, singing and dancing — while following CDC guidelines. During a time when the pandemic had all but decimated in-person events and most other youth activities, AA4K’s summer camps provided kids and teens with an opportunity to make new friends, create fun memories and build confidence — all in a safe environment.

“This year, we will continue to operate, rain or shine, following every required CDC and state protocol. We’ve always been leaders in youth safety, so we can confidently say that kids will be safe, and they will walk away from our camps with an awesome experience,” said Zygo, who founded AA4K with his wife Maggie in 2008. Stephen holds dual degrees in elementary education and musical theater, and both Stephen and Maggie hold Master’s Degrees in education.

The Academy’s flagship location in Mission Viejo features a state-of-the-art theater complete with LED lighting wall, professional sound, and plenty of space for students to safely perform and interact. AA4K’s virtual class component allows even more kids to participate in its performing arts program.

Like so many adapting to the new normal of online life in 2020, Zygo said it took days of research and experimentation to create a virtual solution, drawing on the expertise and experience of his team, the broader theater community, and his brother — an 8-time Tony Award winner. “In the process, we became a leader in virtual theater production,” he said. “Other groups were able to glean information and inspiration from us. We all were just trying to figure out how to make it work, and fortunately, our team created an experience that was phenomenal for so many kids!”

AA4K’s virtual summer camp option also made it more feasible for kids to sign up for multiple sessions, and it allowed those from outside Orange County to attend last year. “We had kids signing up from all over the country. We even had one kid from China, who got up at 4 a.m. to attend,” Zygo said. “The virtual crew became friends on TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms. They created all kinds of fun stuff together — and they all met at our camps.”

In the theater, Zygo and the AA4K staff had to determine how to facilitate in-person productions, where students could interact safely and have fun. The team designed a unique approach which allowed them to perform while social distancing. Students also received daily temperature checks and were required to wear masks. “Over the 9-week period last summer, we did not have a single COVID case,” Zygo said. “Our students and parents can trust us; we are following every CDC COVID guideline.”

From June 7 to August 13, AA4K will offer weeklong, in-person summer camps in Irvine/Tustin and Mission Viejo. To accommodate families who prefer to have their children participate from home, a virtual component will also be offered. This year’s performances will include Evil Descendants 2, Aladdin’s Magic Lamp, Matilda, Harry Potter, and several others. Until the guidelines change to be able to gather in front of a live audience again, AA4K’s final camp performances will be live-streamed and professionally filmed and edited, every Friday, for families to watch and share.

AA4K offers a $25 sibling discount, and a multiple camp discount when registering for more than one camp at a time. Register today, as space is limited!

Moving Forward in 2021

Well-known Laguna Beach painter Karen Phelps has a new muse for her next masterpiece. The scene will take onlookers to the early-February COVID-19 vaccine clinic at her Reata Glen home where Karen’s neighbors were sporting big grins on their faces and Superman capes around their necks.

“This was a moment we’d all been waiting for,” Phelps said with a smile. “This vaccine clinic was like a big party at the community. We had balloons, pinatas, and live entertainment. It felt like the pandemic never happened. This painting will have a unifying theme behind it.”

With nearly all of Reata Glen’s residents vaccinated, the community looks forward to maintaining the strength, hope and resiliency in its residents and team members, and it has big plans to #MoveForward in 2021.

The Unforgettable Year
Reata Glen residents had so much looking forward as they rung in 2020. Like many holidays, the community celebrated with a large New Year’s Eve party.

“This is a lifestyle I always dreamed about,” laughed resident Jeanne Hankins.

Orange County’s newest Life Plan Community, located at 2 Las Estrellas Loop in Rancho Mission Viejo, opened its doors in 2019. The 60-acre campus has 480 residential living homes with dozens of unique floor plan options. Along with the more than 200 activities and amenities, residents enjoy a maintenance-free lifestyle.

In March 2020, as the pandemic escalated, the community quickly made enhancements to adhere to CDC, state and local guidelines to keep residents secure and safe while ensuring they stayed engaged and connected.

“Our team had to re-invent dining, activities and fitness programs overnight,” said Reata Glen Executive Director Suzanne Nasraty. “We strategized outdoor programming and worked to bring activities and parties to residents safely.”

Residents were encouraged to take advantage of the Southern California climate with outdoor fitness classes or to enjoy virtual fitness classes in their own homes. In addition, the community delivered chef-prepared meals, groceries and household supplies to residents.

“It was wonderful to see my neighbors outside on their balconies working out,” said Hankins. “I received so many more services living at Reata Glen than if I were still in my house by myself.”

“One day, the activities team passed out ice cream to everyone,” said resident Karen Rose. “The next day, they had a margarita machine and were handing out margaritas.”

Throughout the pandemic, Reata Glen team members continued providing the high-quality services the community’s residents are accustomed to receiving.

“Our community looked for additional roles and opportunities for staff,” said Nasraty. “Our residents appreciate our team members and vice versa.”

Reata Glen’s Plan to Move Forward
The community ushered in 2021 a little differently.

“We all stood outside on our balconies and did a toast,” Rose recalled. “It was nice to see everyone dressed up and still enjoying each other’s company, even though we were socially distanced.”

With the second vaccine clinic now complete, and nearly all their residents vaccinated, the community is working on plans to expand its programming to include additional in-person activities while following social distancing practices. The Orchards health center, adjacent to Reata Glen, opened its doors this year. Residents now have convenient access to assisted living, memory care, and long-term care in a skilled nursing center — if they ever need it.

“The Life Plan Community option was the most important factor in our decision to move to Reata Glen,” said resident Alan Rose. “If we ever need assisted living or memory care, we have it there.”

Residents say they’re excited to #MoveForward in 2021 and enjoy meals with friends in the community’s restaurants, along with spending more time with their neighbors face to face.

“I can’t wait to sit and play cards with my friends again in the card room,” said Karen. “It’s a small thing, but I’m grateful I have that here at Reata Glen.”

Pediatric Dentistry of San ClementePediatric Dentistry of San Clemente (PDSCKids.com) warmly welcomes you into its immaculate, yet delightfully cozy office. With an emphasis on delivering comfortable care in a fun and entertaining space, every detail has been considered. From game stations in the reception area and ceiling-mounted TVs above each dental chair to sunglasses that soften the glaringly bright dental lights, the staff works to make your family’s visit as relaxing as possible. While teens particularly enjoy melting the day’s stress away in soothing massage chairs, younger ones look forward to receiving a helium balloon and selecting a treat from a wonderful treasure trove of toys at the end of a visit.

Under the meticulous direction of its founder, Dr. Jacob Lee, the highly experienced team at PDSC builds and maintains healthy smiles with the assistance of state-of-the-art technologies. The office utilizes revolutionary laser dentistry that reduces discomfort and minimizes scarring, advanced digital X-ray equipment that yields vital diagnostic images with the least radiation possible, and a purified water supply at each dental chair that employs a distilled, closed water system to maintain patient safety. Above all, the team undertakes numerous hours of continuing education to stay at the forefront of the latest scientific techniques to align with best dental practices.

Since PDSC’s doors opened in 2001, the practice has focused on preventive care to build a lifetime of healthy oral habits for infants, children of all ages, children with special needs, and young adults. After establishing a distinguished career as a dental materials researcher and a teacher/mentor to numerous aspiring pediatric dental specialists, Dr. Lee wanted to focus on raising his two young children. With the help of his wife, Sophie, a computer programmer, they embarked on creating a children’s dental office that offers expert dental care in a warm, positive, and comfortable environment. In addition, Dr. and Mrs. Lee contribute to local schools and community events. Their ultimate goal was to create a place where children actually look forward to going to the dentist!

Dr. and Mrs. Lee have two children, Aaron and Jina. Dr. Aaron followed in his dad’s footsteps to also become a pediatric dentist. He received his DDS from UOP School of Dentistry and then undertook an additional two years of specialist training at USC. Ms. Jina also chose to pursue a career in the dental field. After finishing her university education at Pepperdine, she completed extensive training to become a licensed, registered dental hygienist.

For over 20 years, the team at PDSC KIDS has been proud to meet the dental needs of infants, children, and teenagers. As their patients grew into adulthood, Dr. Crystal Lee, a general dentist, joined the team in 2020 to care for young adults with the same level of attention and excellence they had become accustomed to receiving. Adding a general dentist also allowed PDSC KIDS to build the healthy smiles of their young patients’ parents, who had long wanted to receive the same gentle care as their children. Dr. Crystal is not only a member of the PDSC family, she’s also married to Dr. Aaron, whom she met in dental school. After completing a highly competitive, combined six-year undergraduate/dental school program, Dr. Crystal continued residency training at the prestigious UCLA Hospital Dentistry Program. Now, the Lee family of dental professionals welcomes your whole family to their office as the team members meet all of your family’s dental needs.

Triton Air

A Breath of Fresh Air

by Victoria Kertz

When TRITON AIR isn’t busy installing or repairing a heating, air conditioning or water heating system for one of its clients, the company finds ways to give back to South Orange County. During the devastating COVID-19 shutdowns, Triton Air learned that even the biggest challenges offered plenty of room for growth. Founders Kim and Mike Nicolai are pillars of the San Clemente family-owned and small business network, and they’re leading the charge to improve the lives of local residents. “We have a guiding principle,” Mike says, “to be a community for our community.”

Founded in 2001, Triton Air was started from humble beginnings in the Nicolai’s home. The company has since moved into its current facility, which serves as an office and warehouse. In 2006, as the company grew, it expanded into both neighboring suites. Due to the lockdowns this past March and April, business slowed, and Mike was placed in the regrettable position of needing to lay off some of his employees. As he shared the unfortunate news with his staff, he said, “I look forward to the day when I can see you walk through these doors again, look you in the eye, shake your hand, and welcome you back.” Fortunately, it didn’t take long for them to return.

In May, area families focused on home Improvements, almost in unison, and business skyrocketed. “It completely flipped!” Mike recalls. “It was like going from 0 to 100 miles per hour overnight.” Needless to say, Triton rehired its team, and the company’s business soared. “It was such a meaningful time,” he says “and such an emotional time. To share some positivity was truly rewarding.”

Mike says that Triton’s most requested services are regular maintenance on heating and air systems, but when COVID-19 was determined to be airborne, the focus quickly shifted to air filtration. Many families are now upgrading their systems in an effort to prevent virus spread, and to provide added peace of mind. The MERV-16 mechanical filtration system, which Mike likens to an “N95 mask for your home,” utilizes UVC light technology to prevent virus, bacteria, and even mold reproduction. Another option is a photocatalytic air filtration system, which emulates the air quality on a beach. These indoor climate technologies are also effective in combating smoke from nearby wildfires, Mike says.

Even with thousands of satisfied customers around the county, Triton Air is perhaps best known for its charitable contributions. “Our vision,” Mike says, “is to positively impact people. We ask our team to look out for one another and support one another. Together we go out to help support our community.”

You may see Triton Air’s purple van driving around town. A percentage of sales from that vehicle go to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in memory of one of their team members. COVID brought out the best in Triton Air. Their team volunteered to deliver groceries to high-risk people and those aged 65 and older. Other ways the Triton team has served the community is through free installations of systems, including air conditioning for persons with certain neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Excessive heat exacerbates their symptoms and AC makes a huge difference in their quality of life. Triton also provided free installation on a walk-in cooler for Family Assistance Ministries so FAM could store and distribute more food to those in need.

The cause nearest to the Nicolai’s hearts is an organization in Malawi that provides medical support and transportation for expecting mothers and other medical emergencies. It’s a group they met through their church. Mike and Kim are hopeful that they can travel to the African country in July 2021 to see the ambulance they helped finance.

You can support these causes and a local family business by hiring Triton Air to maintain your current HVAC system or to upgrade your existing system. A quick call to San Clemente’s Triton Air is one you can feel good about making.

Our Family Caring For Your Family

From the moment you walk through the doors at San Clemente Villas by the Sea, you’re welcomed by friendly smiles and a courteous staff who care. The luxury senior living facility is owned and operated by the Brazeau family, and this year they celebrate 18 years in business. Paul and his wife, Aileen, built the Villas in 2002. Following Paul’s passing last year, the family has carried on his tradition of delivering excellence and exemplary service, in a fun and friendly environment. To honor founder Paul Brazeau’s legacy, the family puts their hearts and souls into every aspect of making San Clemente Villas a warm and comfortable place for its residents, and the difference is evident.

San Clemente Villas is the only family owned and operated assisted living community in Southern California. The Brazeau family plays an active role in the day-to-day operations at the Villas, and they are very involved in maintaining the high level of care and meeting the expectations their father established. Paul Brazeau often referred to San Clemente Villas by the Seas as “The cruise ship that never sets sail,” and it’s easy for visitors to understand why.

Beautiful, well-appointed apartments, some with coastal views, balconies or patios, offer residents ample living space with a coastal flair. Vaulted ceilings are also offered in many units, giving the spaces and expansive feel. The lavish, heated pool and jacuzzi boast an ocean view and provide opportunities for relaxation, poolside happy hours, special events, and outdoor exercise. An aqua therapist, available weekly, is also provided to residents at no additional charge.

San Clemente Villas offers month-to-month residential options, in comparison to the expensive buy-ins required at many other corporate-run retirement communities. Rates include fine dining with three delicious home-cooked meals daily, weekly housekeeping, bedding and bath laundry services, all utilities (except telephone and upgraded cable), an emergency alert system and much more. A scheduled transportation system assists residents in getting to and from local appointments, along with taking them to a wide array of activities, entertainers and social programs.

For residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, the Memory Care Unit provides one-on-one attention in a safe, healthy, and secure environment. With ample caregivers per shift, a dedicated nurse and medical technicians, seniors in this comprehensive program can be assured of 24-hour, individualized care from experienced specialists.

Paul’s son, Dan Brazeau, recently shared this message regarding his family’s appreciation for the outpouring of love and kindness they received after his father’s passing. “On behalf of our family, I would like to thank all of our residents, family members, local businesses and our beautiful San Clemente community for 18 years of support. With the passing of my father, Paul Brazeau, we lost the patriarch of our family. His dream was for San Clemente Villas to remain a family-owned and operated luxury senior care facility. I have owned and operated a successful assisted living facility in the Inland Empire since 2006. As a licensed RCFE Administrator, I was fortunate to be included in the location and development of San Clemente Villas — along with Paul’s wife Aileen Brazeau and my siblings, Mark Brazeau, Debbie Chapple, and Leslie Brazeau. After my father’s passing, I stepped in to oversee the operations. We have made many improvements this year, including our new Woody Surf Bus rolling around town! We have some big plans for renovations in 2021, including Paul’s Bistro and Wine Bar (my father loved his wine!). Our family will continue to provide excellent care and beautiful amenities for years to come. We invite you to stop by for one of our many COVID-safe happy hours or social events soon!”

Give San Clemente Villas by the Sea a call to learn more or to arrange a private tour of the community.

Your Ticket to Ride

Victoria Kertz

CycleogicalNo gym? No problem. The great outdoors awaits and Cycleogical has your ticket to ride. With hundreds of miles of South OC trails boasting picturesque views and vistas, now’s the time to gear up and get rolling. Whether you enjoy leisurely cruises with the family, want a challenging workout, or seek an opportunity to explore your surroundings while getting some fresh air, owners Bill and Melissa Mol will fit you with just the right bike to suit your needs.

Dana Point’s premier bike shop, conveniently located near La Plaza Park, is stocked with everything you’ll need to hit the open road. As the pandemic made its mark on every business this year, Bill and Melissa anticipated a surge in demand for cycling and prepared for the eventuality that followed. In early February, the Mol’s staffed up and ramped up inventories to meet the needs of the local community, but the level of interest even surpassed their projections. When gyms and offices closed, customers poured in for everything from bike maintenance to road bikes and e-bikes. Mountain bikes flew off the racks, and in just the first four days of California’s lockdown, the most affordable models were completely sold out.

With inventories replenished, Bill is thrilled to see a continued enthusiasm for cycling. As he points out, you can ride year-round in Southern California while getting a workout and enjoying the outdoors. He and Melissa are passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles, and the resurgence in cycling (or riding, as mountain bikers say) has been fueled by the recent desire for alternatives to indoor or densely packed activities.

It was a shared passion for biking that led the Mols to say goodbye to corporate jobs and open Cycleogical, a name that Melissa coined. “We’ve always wanted to do our own thing,” Melissa says. “We’re lucky to have a great staff and a good sense of family,” she adds.

Cyclelogical offers all manner of bikes, from sleek road frames to electric styles and rugged mountain varieties, as well as every accessory and part a cyclist could imagine. With an unprecedented demand for maintenance and repairs in past months, Bill says parts like tubes and tires are difficult to secure, so he proactively sources them from all over the country. It’s this level of commitment that enables Cycleogical to offer a high level of service, such as a quick, 24 to 48 hour turnaround for repairs.

Their service team (some of whom have been there since doors opened) are an integral part of the customer loyalty the company has cultivated. The newest addition to the service department isn’t a person, though; it’s a heavy-duty lift that allows the team to service and repair e-bikes, which typically weigh too much for other shops to handle. In fact, the Mols are in the development stage of a store-branded e-bike they expect will be available next year.

Cycleogical is also finding creative ways to host organized charity rides like it’s done in the past. The Mols have sponsored annual events such as the Dana Point Grand Prix and Kids on Wheels, both of which raise funds for new bikes that are donated to the Boys and Girls Club of the South Coast Area. Due to social distancing guidelines, the Mols have opted to sponsor a Virtual Ride Challenge this year. Proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club, and will also be used to incentivize kids to participate by offering a range of prizes. “We want to encourage kids to get outside,” Melissa says of the new event. “They say it only takes three weeks for healthy lifestyle changes to become habits.” Fortunately, the same is true for adults!

Start your cardio routine with a new bike or check one out for a family member. Premium brands like Cannondale, Santa Cruz, Yeti, and Pivot are in stock and waiting for you at Cycleogical. And with the holidays right around the corner, it’s the perfect place to shop local and support a family-owned business.

No matter what kind of bike the cyclist in your life rides, Cycleogical has a high-tech accessory, helmet, or car rack to give this season. The friendly and knowledgeable staff will help you make the best decision, and don’t forget to say hello to the resident, shop dog, Ryder. The sweet, standard poodle is always on hand when the Mols are in the shop.
