Expect More from Retirement

Hundreds of older adults in South Orange County will soon have a new place to call home this spring. Reata Glen, the much-anticipated Life Plan Community in the up-and-coming master-planned neighborhood of Rancho Mission Viejo, will host its grand opening on Friday, April 26.

Two years ago, more than 550 workers began construction on the community located at 2 Las Estrellas Loop in Rancho Mission Viejo. From the beginning, Reata Glen’s mission was to provide the highest-quality experience in retirement living.

Just two minutes from downtown San Juan Capistrano, Reata Glen offers 480 residential living homes with more than 20 unique floor plans to meet the needs and desires of today’s seniors looking for quality living options with amenities and wellness services.

Residential options include one-, two- and three-bedroom apartment homes, and two-and three-bedroom villas with attached garages. Every residence comes with a complete kitchen as well as other upscale interior finishes and customization options.

“Older adults are yearning for a location where they can grow, and that’s what Reata Glen will offer every resident,” said Marketing Manager Stephanie Riggs. “We believe there’s a need to educate older adults about senior living options that can enhance their lifestyle while providing peace of mind for their future.”

Since the announcement of the community’s development five years ago, Reata Glen has seen reservations climb quickly for apartments and villas. The high demand has limited the number of available homes, but there are still opportunities to get in on the ground floor.

The 60-acre campus will provide a maintenance-free lifestyle for its 600 residents, who will enjoy vast views of the surrounding hills as they experience an active and engaging lifestyle. Residents will be able to take advantage of more than 200 activities and amenities, including a movie theater, performing arts theater, fitness center and spa, an indoor / outdoor pool, multiple dining venues, billiards and card rooms, gardening areas, and walking and cycling trails with access to San Juan Creek Trail, leading directly to Doheny State Beach.

Recent studies confirm that when people move to a Life Plan Community like Reata Glen, they’re more likely to make new friends and try new things, and most report benefits to their overall health and well-being. As part of its commitment to fostering relationships, Reata Glen will also focus heavily on providing multigenerational opportunities for residents and those living within the Rancho Mission Viejo neighborhood.

With 13 percent of the Orange County population already reaching their senior years and that number expected to double in 20 years, Reata Glen is positioned to meet the lifestyle and wellness needs of this dynamic population,” Riggs noted.

Reata Glen residents will have the comfort of knowing that regardless of their health care needs, they can remain close to their family and friends. As a Life Plan Community, Reata Glen offers residents access to the adjacent health center, including assisted living, memory care, and long-term care in a skilled nursing center, should they ever need it.

“Families have been interested in Reata Glen for more than five years,” said Riggs. “Many of them have driven by, curious to view the completed construction of this new community and lifestyle. We’re all so excited to see Reata Glen open its doors, knowing it will positively impact the lives of generations to come.”

Reata Glen will host an open house event on Friday, April 26, for invited guests. To be added to the invitation list, call 949.545.2200. Other ways to learn more about the community – floor plan options, pricing and location, services and amenities, and more – visit ReataGlen.com or call to schedule an appointment.

Dana Point Festival of Whales

Dana Point Festival of Whales

Dana Point Festival of Whales

Catch the Action at the 48th Annual Festival of Whales

Springtime in Dana Point brings the return of the Dana Point Festival of Whales, the world’s longest running event honoring these amazing creatures of the deep. Traditionally set for the first two weekends in March, this year’s event will run March 2, 3, 9 and 10.

Ask any local; Dana Point is year-round perfection when it comes to whale watching. A wide variety of species are regulars here, but there’s something extra special about this time of year, when California gray whales appear in numbers, using Dana Point’s majestic headlands as a landmark in the longest animal migration on the planet. The grays’ 10,000-mile-plus round trip between their warm breeding and calving waters of Baja Mexico and their cold Arctic feeding waters of the Bering Sea is the “magical migration” that served as the original inspiration for this Festival, nearly half a century ago.

This is a favorite time of year to observe our ocean dwelling cetacean neighbors, living it up in the Pacific waves bounding our beautiful city by the sea. The whales, many with calves at their sides, are a sight to behold with tail flukes slapping, blowholes spouting, sidling up to boats filled with excited onlookers, perhaps as curious about us as we are about them.

The Festival kicks off with a parade and street fair in the downtown area and then continues with four full days of whale watching along with fun, educational, and entertaining activities throughout the Dana Point Harbor. Bring the entire family down for games, music, great food and beautiful artwork.

The Festival of Whales is dedicated to fostering a love and appreciation for cetaceans via entertaining, informative, and cultural experiences that all ages can enjoy. The event is a collaborative production brought to you by the Festival of Whales Foundation—a 501(c)3 charitable organization and in conjunction with other local nonprofit organizations. The Foundation was created to inform, inspire and attract residents of Dana Point and visitors from around the world to learn about the planet’s largest mammals and to realize the importance of protecting and preserving the oceans and all ocean life.

Join the fun at the 48th annual Dana Point Festival of Whales. For more information, visit FestivalofWhales.com and follow the event on Facebook and Instagram @festivalofwhales.

OCWineFest

An Exploration of Taste

2ND ANNUAL – MARCH 9-10

OCWineFest returns to San Juan Capistrano March 9 and 10, to sip for a cause, bringing top wineries into one location for two days of wine tasting and wine education on the historic grounds of A Stone’s Throw Winery, with many OC-based winemakers, luxe exhibitors and great philanthropic organizations in the mix. All tickets include unlimited tastings and a souvenir glass.

In its second year, OCWineFest, produced in coordination with LAWineFest owner and CEO, Dr. Joel M. Fisher, will be bigger and better, continuing to blaze the trail of bringing wine and people together – from the novice to the aficionado – in an accessible way, balancing fun, exploration and education with wine and beer tastings, food pairings, seminars, and a chance to meet some of the area’s top sommeliers and winemakers. The event will also feature gourmet goodies and luxury products from a variety of vendors.

Tasty eats will be available for purchase from Cousins Maine Lobster, MAIZ Cocina, Nostimo Greek Mediterranean Cuisine, Slammin’ Sliders and The Poke Hut Food Truck. There will be games by King Barrel and dancing to the tunes of the The Shenanigans Band, Three Forks Junction and other live acts.

The spirit of giving will continue through 2019 at OCWineFest, which will raise funds and awareness for three amazing philanthropic organizations — Kids Konnected, the Swanner House Restoration Foundation, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

At its inaugural event in 2018, almost 2,000 guests sipped more than 200 wines and beers from 40 producers, while they mingled, danced, nibbled bites and learned about award-winning wines from certified sommeliers and the winemakers themselves.

Tickets for the 2019 OCWineFest retail for $100 for General Admission and $125 for All Access, (which provides access to the exclusive VIP boutique winery areas). Designated drivers are appreciated, and their tickets cost only $25. Stay tuned for ticket deals by keeping in touch with OCWineFest online and on social media. More info at www.OCWineFest.com.

Dewey’s Home Appliances and Electronics

Dewey’s Home Appliances and Electronics

Dewey’s Home Appliances and Electronics

Exceeding Expectations Since 1950

by Veronica Badzey

Dewey’s Home Appliances and ElectronicsFor the best deal in town on your next dishwasher, refrigerator, washer/dryer, or TV, come to Dewey’s Home Appliances and Electronics, proudly serving South Orange County since 1950. A family-owned company with a reputation for integrity, exceptional customer service, and unbeatable prices, Dewey’s offers an extensive selection of premium and mid-range kitchen, laundry, and refrigeration appliances, as well as electronics from the industry’s leading manufacturers.

But what sets Dewey’s apart from the competition isn’t just great products from trusted name brands like Thermador, Bosch, Dacor, Monogram, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, GE, Whirlpool, Café, and LG. Customer service is its number one priority, and that shows in the numerous glowing reviews and countless recommendations it receives from loyal clients, some of whom have been shopping at Dewey’s for four generations.

“Our goal,” relates owner and operator Alex Haynes, who bought Dewey’s from his father in 1991, “is to provide every customer with the best product that fills their needs at the lowest possible price, along with top-notch service to back it up. There’s simply no other big box appliance store around that can say that.”

Dewey’s is a member of Nationwide Marketing Group, a national consortium of thousands of independent retailers with over $18 billion worth of buying power. This means it can offer manufacturer direct pricing on the latest technology from the industry’s top brands, like Thermador’s Professional product line shown on the cover. This luxury kitchen remodel features a 36” range top, 36” hood insert, double-oven with steam assist, and panel ready refrigerator columns with push-to-open doors.

The team at Dewey’s uses special data harvesting software that searches the internet to find real-time pricing on any available product, which allows the company to easily match or beat competitors’ prices. Customers can also take advantage of exclusive rebate programs, like one of Dewey’s current rebates from Frigidaire, which offers up to $500 off on the Professional Cooking product line. Delivery service is complimentary anywhere in South Orange County, with basic set-up included for free-standing appliances. Installation of built-in appliances is offered at some of the lowest costs in the industry.

Unlike most of the “big box” stores, Dewey’s dedicated team of sales staff are all highly knowledgeable, full-time professionals with 10 to 15 years of experience each. Because they don’t work on commission, customers never feel pressured to buy; instead, they receive reliable advice on choosing the ideal home appliances and electronics for their needs and budget. Dewey’s will even send out technicians to take accurate onsite measurements, which is especially important when buying built-ins for laundry rooms and kitchens.

“We’ve seen so many nightmare experiences,” Alex relates, “from people who bought online or from one of the big box stores. The product usually ends up being a bad fit or having the wrong features. At Dewey’s we do everything we can to help you avoid those kinds of problems.”

Even after an appliance is bought and paid for, Dewey’s continues to go the extra mile to assist customers. Its professional Service Center provides cost-effective repair and maintenance services from qualified techs – something that the big box stores just don’t offer.

If you’re an interior designer, builder, property manager, or contractor, be sure to ask about special programs for trade professionals. Along with additional pricing incentives, Dewey’s will also assign you a dedicated point person to make sure your project runs smoothly from start to finish, giving you extra peace of mind and saving you time and money.

But Dewey’s commitment to the community doesn’t stop at offering the highest quality products and exceptional service at rock bottom prices. “When you buy from us,” Alex states proudly, “you can feel good about knowing that a portion of your money goes right back into the community, whether that is through helping your local high school, youth sports league, halfway house, community youth group, or charitable organization.”

Call or stop by the San Clemente showroom today. Dewey’s is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Fuel Shack

The Fuel Shack

The Fuel Shack

by Dina Scaglione

The Fuel Shack“People will forget what you said; people will forget what you did, but they will always remember how you made them feel.” This sums up the experience at The Fuel Shack in San Clemente. From the moment you walk through the door of this recently opened restaurant, you’re immediately greeted with a warm smile and a genuine ‘happy to see you’ hello, as if you’re part of the family.

The Fuel Shack is an eatery where you not only feel welcome, but where unique, fresh-to-order breakfast and lunch is prepared with a tremendous amount of care and creativity. Featured menu items are made using a slow-cooking methodology — an old-school technique that enhances the flavors in each dish, without a fryer, griddle or grill.

Yolanda, The Fuel Shack’s manager, is a retired pediatrician and life-long chef who leverages a wonderful fusion of ingredients from her travels abroad and from time spent as a child cooking in the kitchen with her loving grandma. For those of us who grew up in a home that revolved around family gatherings and intentionally prepared meals, the ‘food is love’ feeling at The Fuel Shack certainly rings true.

Looking to start your day with a nutritious and delicious breakfast? Then, the Tropical Matcha, a coconut and matcha waffle, generously topped with a medley of tropical fruits, whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate is just the fix. For those wanting something a bit more hearty, don’t pass up the Savory Waffle Sliders: two cornmeal waffles nestled around Oaxacan-style black beans, cheese and the signature Kickin’ Chicken Tinga or veggies — if you prefer a meatless dish. This two-fisted sandwich is finished with your choice of fire-roasted salsa, salsa verde, or chimichurri sauce for that extra kick. No modern breakfast place would be complete without the popular avocado toast on its menu. The Fuel Shacks’ Awesome Avocado features seasoned avocado, micro greens, tomatoes, bacon and a cage-free egg, all loaded generously on a thick slice of Texas toast.

The Fuel Shack aims to wake you up with the aroma of freshly brewed gourmet coffees, your favorite concoction from its espresso bar, house-made cold brew and delicious teas. A beautiful selection of assorted baked items, from moist, oversized muffins to mouth-watering, homemade banana bread topped with a cream cheese frosting, are a definite can’t-miss.

Stop by and fuel up! Open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekends, The Fuel Shack is conveniently located on the corner of Camino de Estrella and Camino Mira Costa, across from the Sprouts shopping center.

The Parish School | St. Edward The Confessor Catholic Church

Always learning, The Parish School graduates are confident and compassionate young men and women who will make a difference. Faithful to Catholic values, The Parish School at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church sustains an evolving schoolwide learning environment that inspires each learner to achieve his or her God-given potential inside and outside the classroom.

ALWAYS LEARNING
The Parish School is #AlwaysLearning. Learners don’t just memorize math equations or recite spelling words. They ask questions. They explore. They love not just school – but the process of learning. And learning comes not just through doing things right, but through doing things wrong. The Parish School develops resilient, innovative learners who try, grow and achieve.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
The Parish School utilizes a standard-based curriculum aligned to the Roman Catholic Church teachings which prepares learners for high school and beyond. The faculty and staff continually expose learners to meaningful hands-on experiences, resulting in thoughtful risk-taking, problem solving and collaboration.

SMALLER CLASSES – IN-DEPTH LEARNING
Not only does the school boast an impressive 11:1 instructor-to-student ratio, they have a unique classroom format. The Lower School is the first in the Diocese to use Departmentalized Platooning. Each class moves as a unit between three classrooms, with a teacher focused on just two subjects. The result – a richer learning experience and expert teachers.

In the Upper School, each learner has eight periods daily on a waterfall schedule, the standard for many high schools. The classes are integrated, yet small groups and individualized instruction ensures learners’ needs are met and challenged.

CREATIVITY
Through art and music classes and after-school activities like chorus and the Spring Musical, The Parish School builds creative and confident leaders. And, they are one of the only schools to offer Makerspace – a hands-on studio that integrates technology, engineering and creativity with project-based solutions to real-world situations

FAITH DEVELOPMENT
Each day, the school community prays, serves and grows in their relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It is present in the books they read, the history they teach, and the music they sing. Learners attend weekly mass, provide mentorship through Prayer Partners and participate in monthly hands-on service projects and retreats.
