Scarlet Kitchen and Lounge

Scarlet Kitchen and Lounge

by Dina Scaglione

We all love a great story that takes us to unexpected places. Scarlet Kitchen and Lounge will certainly treat you to a palatable adventure, with pleasant yet unexpected turns, leaving you salivating to consume another savory chapter. Scarlet’s story began in January 2020, penned by a husband and wife team, Chef Paige and Matt Riordan. Chef Paige’s New York City training has created a modern speakeasy, with a laid-back, fashionable dining experience. Like a charming novel from decades passed, Scarlet is situated against a peaceful backdrop of rolling hills, where soft evening breezes remind you the ocean beckons only a few miles away. The bourgeoning community of Rancho Mission Viejo has warmly embraced the family-owned and operated Scarlet for bringing a beautiful richness to comfort food, in an unhurried setting.

Every good story grabs you from the beginning, and Scarlet is no exception. For starters, I recommend the tuna tartare with thinly sliced cucumber, avocado, ponzu sauce, spicy mayo, wasabi crema, and sesame seeds, accompanied by crunchy wonton chips. Worth every decadent bite, the bacon wrapped dates and the crack fries, which absolutely live up to their colorful name, are a must-try. Lighter options include the summer beet salad showcasing roasted beets, goat cheese, pesto, couscous, and fresh basil tossed in a tasty balsamic, maple mustard vinaigrette. Taco lovers will find some interesting twists on their favorite handhelds, including lobster, blackened fish or slow cooked barbeque carrot tacos, served on corn or flour tortillas. Scarlet offers a plethora of generously portioned entrees including surf and turf, or pan-seared pork tenderloin with sweet potato puree and yam hash, generously ladled with a delicious maple bourbon sauce. Liquid Gold is a generations-old family recipe featuring tender flavorful pork and lamb ragout with pappardelle and shaved parmesan. Sunday brunch fans will delight in traditional favorites such as Eggs Benedict as well as more exotic faire like Lobster Grilled Cheese, Dutch Pancakes, or Duck and Waffles.

Weekly specials include Wine and Whiskey Wednesdays, Taco Tuesdays, with live music Wednesday through Saturday. Located in Rancho Mission Viejo, enjoy Sunday Brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Closed Mondays. Visit Scarlet Kitchen and Lounge and write your own culinary tale.

Sendero Dental Studio

Sendero Dental Studio

Your Family Dentist

by Victoria Kertz

Sendero Dental StudioImagine a dentist’s office with cozy, spa-like interiors, soft lighting, and a staff so warm and friendly that upon entering, you gain an instant sense of calm. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? Discover this peaceful experience at Sendero Dental Studio in Rancho Mission Viejo — an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life and a uniquely tranquil setting for your next dental appointment. It’s also home to one of the best-reviewed dentists in South Orange County.

Dr. Jeffrey Barrera launched Sendero Dental Studio as an intimate alternative to his existing Rancho Santa Margarita office, a large and very busy location that’s tidied up the teeth of hundreds of local families for decades. While both sites boast state-of-the-art dental equipment, the latest treatments and a knowledgeable staff, the new studio is significantly smaller and quieter. Designed for maximum relaxation and comfort, Sendero’s minimalist décor, in neutral shades of white and grey, feels less like a scene for a root canal and more like the lobby of a luxury resort.

Aesthetics aside, Dr. Barrera’s top priority is to provide personalized, best-in-class dental and cosmetic procedures that deliver optimal results. Patients at Sendero Dental Studio feel confident knowing that Dr. Barrera has nearly 30 years of experience and offers both pediatric and adult general dental care, so the entire family is able to receive cleanings and check-ups in one convenient location. For those interested in Invisalign, he is one in a select group of dentists who has completed Dr. David Galler’s elite Invisalign training.

Dr. Barrera’s true passion is cosmetic dentistry. He offers dental crowns, bridges, veneers, and repositions teeth in a fashion that makes them look perfectly straight. He also provides full-mouth reconstruction and dentures. For dental implants, he partners with top regional specialists with expertise in the field.

Not sure which service is right for you? Each new patient receives a total dental health consultation to discuss treatment options and how lifestyle and nutrition play a role in oral wellness. When the time comes to select a treatment plan, Dr. Barrera’s office utilizes the most advanced digital imaging and lab technology so patients can visualize their post-procedure results. This makes the decision-making process much easier, because predictable results create more satisfied patients.

It’s those same happy patients who rave about their experience with Sendero’s delightful staff and award them five star reviews on Yelp and social media. “I’m blessed to have an experienced staff,” enthuses Dr. Barrera. “We are like family and we try our best to always be respectful of a patient’s time.”

From the friendly front desk to skilled hygienists, the entire office is committed to helping patients achieve a healthy and beautiful smile. “We’re changing peoples’ lives by giving them something that they’ve never had. We celebrate the process when a patient completes that work,” says Dr. Barrera. “The integrity of our dentistry is extremely important. We’re here to support the community and earn their trust.”

In Rancho Mission Viejo, the Sendero team actively participates in a variety of organizations and supports nearby sports teams. “We love what we do here and are so happy to be a part of the community. We’re ready to grow with it and are excited to see where it goes,” shares Dr. Barrera.

If you’re looking for a dentist who values your time and has decades of experience to treat your smile with the utmost care, Dr. Barrera would like to hear from you. Whether you’re in need of an annual cleaning or want to dramatically improve your smile, you’re invited to stop by, ask questions, or just say hello. Find Sendero Dental Studio’s new space in the Gelson’s shopping center at Ortega Highway and Antonio Parkway.

Parmiss Mediterranean Restaurant

Parmiss Mediterranean Restaurant

Parmiss Mediterranean Restaurant

by Dina Scaglione

A new eatery has emerged in Mercado Village near downtown San Juan Capistrano, showcasing savory Mediterranean fare, served up in a quaint and inviting atmosphere. Family-owned and operated, Parmiss Mediterranean Restaurant brings a delightful new energy along with an abundance of delicious and unique Persian flavors. Opening its doors on April 13, the local community has embraced Parmiss like a long-lost friend — lured by its warm, generous hospitality and delectable cuisine.

When you visit Parmiss, prepare to experience an array of sumptuous dishes, such as appetizers like Panir-o Sabzi, comprised of cheese and fresh mint, Persian style marinated olives, calamari and chicken wings. The herbaceous falafel is light and tasty with just the right amount of crunch. Side dips include creamy hummus, Babaghanoush and Mast-o Khiar, freshly prepared with yogurt, cucumber and dill. I highly recommend the Koobideh — made with minced ground beef or chicken, seasoned with grated onions and spices, appropriately served with Basmati rice, grilled tomato, onions, and green peppers. The marinated rack of lamb is not to be missed — so incredibly tender and flavorful you won’t believe your taste buds. You will also find an assortment of kabobs to suit any palate, including elegantly marinated salmon, chicken, filet mignon, shrimp or veggie skewers. At Parmiss, rice is anything but dull. The Albaloo Polo compliments any meal, seasoned with cinnamon, saffron and a surprising touch of sour cherries — adding just the right balance of aromatics and sweet tang. Additionally, their popular family platters allow you to taste an assortment of entrees that easily serves 6 to 8 people.

Parmiss is open daily for lunch and dinner, take-out or dine in. Sit at the bar and linger over a lovely glass of wine or a cappuccino and enjoy hookah on the patio and music each weekend.

The ULTIMATE Resource for Structural Correction

by Shelley Hickox

If you’re searching for relief from back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, strains or injuries, Dr. Ryan Anderson of Trestles Chiropractic and Laser Therapy is ready to assist. As a trusted and respected resource for chiropractic care, he believes in treating the root cause of a patient’s condition, not merely the symptoms.

Trestles Chiropractic focuses on structural chiropractic care versus symptom-based treatments. This approach is geared toward identifying and correcting physiological abnormalities known as Structural Shift. There are specific examination tools utilized throughout treatment to ensure that progress and adaptations, specific to each patient’s needs, are made to improve how you feel and function.

Spinal Decompression and high power laser therapy are also used by Dr. Anderson to provide a comprehensive treatment approach. Ultraviolet laser is positioned on specific areas of the skin to accelerate soft tissue healing. In addition, Trestles Chiropractic offers therapeutic massage to pinpoint specific areas of the body that may need additional attention.

Dr. Anderson studied Chemistry at the University of Riverside and received his Doctor of Chiropractic from Southern California University of Health Sciences. His passion for chiropractic care stems from personal experience with chronic allergies and digestive issues. Because of the positive effects he experienced through regular chiropractic treatments, he’s committed to delivering results for his patients so they may also lead full and healthy lives.

Dr. Anderson recently added Dr. Emery Lipp to his team. She specializes in conditions involving the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Through techniques such as diversified, manual, flexion-distraction, activator techniques, and muscle release technique (MRT), Dr. Lipp provides life-altering pain management treatments and therapies.

“There is a lot more to chiropractic care than pain management,” Dr. Anderson explains. “There are deeper, systemic issues that can be resolved. We like to call symptoms ‘secondary conditions.’ We look at the spine and nervous system and ask, ‘Is there a connection deeper than my arm hurting or having shooting pain? Where does the dysfunction come from?’ That’s why we incorporate state-of-the-art diagnostics like digital x-rays and surface thermography to get a better picture.”

Dr. Anderson often treats patients who have become frustrated with their conditions and are seeking alternate methods of care. There are no cookie cutter approaches at Trestles Chiropractic and every patient receives a thorough evaluation and customized therapy for their unique issues.

“I started seeing Dr. Ryan Anderson about eight years ago. He really helped me get adjusted after having my second baby and helped to relieve my shoulder and back pain. Any time I need an adjustment, I always go to see him— I would recommend him to everyone,” enthuses Julie B.

Knowing that he’s able to make a discernable difference in a patient’s quality of life is what drives Dr. Anderson. “All I do is facilitate their healing,” he humbly states. “As I watch a patient improve, I’m inspired by the excitement and hope we are able to bring.”

As a dedicated family man and an integral part of the coastal South Orange County community since 2013, Dr. Anderson thoroughly enjoys living in San Clemente with his wife Danielle, six-year-old son Rex, and two-year-old daughter Sage. When he’s not treating patients in one of his offices, you might find him on set, where he serves as a Medical Technical Advisor in the film industry, most recently on Season 2 of the Netflix series Dead To Me.

“I grew up coming here to surf and there was just something special about San Clemente,” Dr. Anderson shared. “I felt like there was an openness and sense of community that drew me to the area. We feel it’s important to give back and have been a sponsor of San Clemente High School’s football, basketball, baseball and cheer teams, along with local Little League teams.”

Foundations Cognitive Schools

Foundations Cognitive Schools
FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES

Foundations Cognitive Schools

The Foundations program methodology is to move past the traditional concept of simply managing the symptoms of learning disabilities and, instead, address the root cause of these challenges. Based on the concept of neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to change, heal, and grow in response to targeted training), each day, students perform cognitive exercises that have been scientifically proven to strengthen weak cognitive capabilities. In other words, the goal of Foundations is to transform the brain, establishing capabilities that did not exist and, thus, begin to instill a newfound confidence and a love of learning. By strengthening cognitive capacities, students are able to work through tasks which were once incredibly challenging for them. In addition to its scientific approach to cognitive improvement, Foundations includes state-certified reading, writing, and math programs. When combined with the cognitive exercises, these programs have helped many students achieve dramatic academic improvement.

INDIVIDUALIZED PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES INCLUSION IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Foundations is a full-time program for students in 1st through 12th grade. Each classroom has a student-teacher ratio of 4:1. Students are assessed and work at a pace and level that is appropriate for his or her particular needs. In order to ensure that students are connected socially to others in their peer group, Foundations is located on the campus of a large private school, which allows students to attend recess, lunch, and enrichment/elective classes (P.E., art, music, etc.) with mainstream students in their grade. They also have the opportunity to play on sports teams and to participate in extra-curricular school activities offered at our partner school, such as choir, dance, cheer, clubs, etc. High School students are offered the option to pursue a High School Diploma, or to participate in a Certificate of Completion program.

OUR PARTNER SCHOOL
Foundations is located on the San Juan Capistrano campus of the prestigious Fairmont Schools. The beautiful campus, spanning 66,000 square feet, includes two educational wings full of classroom space, playgrounds, a gymnasium, a music room, science labs, and more.

Journey School

Journey School
EDUCATING HEADS, HEARTS & HANDS SINCE 2000

Journey School

Award-winning Journey School, a K-8 public charter school in Aliso Viejo, is a place where students share a sense of community not typically seen in traditional schools. When asked if he likes school, a second grader replied, “I don’t like weekends because I don’t get to go to Journey.” A fifth grader who landed his seat at Journey in first grade revealed, “I like some friends better than others, but everyone in my class is my best friend.”

“Students at Journey stay with the same teacher and class for multiple years,” a third-grade parent explained. “Strong connections are developed over time, and the entire class begins to feel like a family. The unique teacher-student bond is leveraged to reach children in deeper ways and that relationship has made all the difference for my child.”

Each day at Journey School begins with the ringing of the bell that hangs from a bell tower at the front of campus. Sounds of laughter and singing can be heard as small feet jump rope alongside the beautifully adorned kindergarten classrooms. Older students gather excitedly on ramps and teachers greet them individually as they enter their classrooms. The energy that runs through Journey’s campus is undeniably contagious.

“I was so nervous to start at a new school in 6th grade, but the students were so welcoming,” shared Isabella. “The way we learn at Journey is very different from my old school. Journey makes learning fun!”

Journey School offers a rigorous curriculum that uniquely blends academics, art, music, nature, and ethics into daily lessons. Inspired by the core principles of Waldorf education, Journey’s outside-the-box education prepares students to be intellectually, artistically, and socially well-rounded, cultivating critical thinkers who are ready to embrace the challenges of high school and beyond.
