If you discover mold on your walls or around your windows, it’s time to call South County Restoration in San Clemente. Owner Casey McCants has been inundated with calls this season due to the record rainfall. Homes with older roofs or poorly installed windows are especially vulnerable to water intrusion, which can worsen as temperatures rise. Acting quickly can help prevent costly damage and health risks.

As a trusted leader in water restoration, South County Restoration specializes in detecting, remediating, and repairing water-related issues. Casey brings years of expertise to every job, guiding homeowners through the often-complex process of filing insurance claims. His team ensures claims are handled correctly to secure fair compensation. “You open the claim, we’ll do the rest,” Casey says, offering much-needed reassurance during stressful times.

Unlike many companies that focus on just one aspect of water mitigation, South County Restoration provides full-service solutions. From stopping leaks to mold removal, re-piping, and drywall repair, they handle every step of the process. Casey’s unique background as a general contractor and homeowner advocate ensures every detail is managed efficiently and professionally. “It’s such a confusing time for homeowners. We’re just here to help,” he explains.

This season, South County Restoration has focused heavily on mold remediation, as lingering moisture creates an ideal breeding ground for mold. Left unchecked, mold can cause serious health issues, particularly for those with respiratory conditions or weakened immune systems. The company emphasizes the importance of prevention to avoid long-term complications.

While rain is a common culprit, other sources like pinhole leaks, floods, or burst pipes can also lead to water damage. No matter the cause, South County Restoration is equipped to handle everything from water extraction and drying to cleaning, sanitization and full property restoration. Using advanced tools and techniques, they work quickly to restore your home to its original condition.

Available 24/7, South County Restoration’s Rapid Response Team ensures fast arrival times and immediate assistance. Before contacting your insurance company, call Casey at 949-536-8204. For more information about their services, visit SouthCountyRestoration.com.

The Makers of Kahuna Grip

From Surfboards to Bathtubs:
Innovation That Keeps You Safe

What began as a solution for surfers has grown into a revolution in safety for homes and outdoor spaces. Kahuna Grip, originally designed as an adhesive traction alternative to surf wax in 2007, quickly made waves among surfers. Seeing its potential beyond the surfboard, the founders expanded their technology to create VersaTraction, a line of step treads designed for pool areas and slippery outdoor environments.

The company’s most transformative pivot, however, came after a personal mishap. When one of the founders suffered a serious fall in the bathtub, requiring months of recovery, CEO Harris Farber and his team turned their attention to bathroom safety. This accident inspired VersaTraction’s innovative bathmats — a game-changing solution to an all-too-common household hazard.

A SMARTER SOLUTION FOR BATH SAFETY
VersaTraction’s clear, all-natural adhesive bathmats stand apart from traditional options. Designed without abrasive materials, glass, or sticky residue, these mats provide a comfortable, soft touch underfoot. The real magic lies in their water-activated properties: when wet, they become incredibly “grippy,” delivering optimal traction even when fully submerged. When dry, the mats maintain a rubbery feel that’s gentle on bare feet.

Customers often say they forget the mats are even there — they integrate seamlessly into the tub or shower floor without shifting, bunching up, or creating trip hazards. Plus, their unique design prevents water accumulation underneath, reducing mold and mildew risks common with removable mats.

PRIORITIZE SAFETY THIS JANUARY
As we enter National Bath Safety Month, it’s the perfect time to evaluate the safety of one of the most-used spaces in your home. With preventable accidents being the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, bathroom safety is more important than ever. Wet surfaces and hard fixtures can make bathrooms particularly hazardous, especially for children and seniors.

TIPS FOR A SAFER BATHROOM

  • Non-Slip Mats: Invest in high-quality traction solutions like VersaTraction’s Non-Slip Mats, designed to enhance safety both inside and outside the tub or shower.
  • Education: Talk with family members, especially elderly relatives or young children, about bathroom safety and best practices to prevent slips and falls.

By making small, impactful changes, you can create a safer environment for yourself and your loved ones.

In honor of National Bath Safety Month, Kahuna Grip is offering 30% OFF all bathroom safety products for the month of January.

Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD)
FREE SPANISH AND MANDARIN LANGUAGE IMMERSION

Capistrano Unified School District

The Capistrano Unified School District Language Immersion program started in 1992, and develops high levels of biliteracy, cultural appreciation and academic success in students. With programs in Spanish and Mandarin beginning in preschool and continuing to graduation, students receive a premiere dual-language education that is “additive bilingual,” meaning the student’s first language continues to be strengthened and augmented while acquiring a second language.

Spanish is taught in a Two-Way Immersion program, which is structured with an equal number of students who are monolingual or dominant in English and students who are monolingual or dominant Spanish, at the time of enrollment. Mandarin is taught in a One-Way Immersion program, with the majority of students dominant in English at the time of enrollment. The Mandarin preschool–grade 12 program is the only public program in Orange County and one of only a handful in California.

The Language Immersion program focuses on the goals of bilingualism, biliteracy, academic achievement, and sociocultural competence. Language Immersion students develop high levels of language proficiency and literacy in both program languages, demonstrate high levels of academic achievement and develop an appreciation for and understanding of diverse cultures. An average of 52% of Language Immersion students take one or more AP/IB classes, and 98% of Language Immersion students earn a score of 3 or higher on the AP Spanish Language Exam.

In the fall of 2022, the Language Immersion program received a Golden Bell Award from the California School Board Association (CSBA) in the English Learner/Biliteracy category. The Golden Bell Awards promote excellence in public education and school board governance, and CUSD was honored for having a highly comprehensive and effective program.

The Language Immersion program continues to grow each year, in both enrollment and capability. Families interested in learning more can visit the Language Immersion website on capousd.org.
