Parents & Kids Rave That AA4K is The Best in The OC!

by Victoria Kertz

Summer is right around the corner, and after two pandemic-plagued years, the team at Acting Academy for Kids and Teens is ready to burst into song! If your kids are looking for that quintessential summer camp experience, a place where they can make new friends and sharpen their performing arts skills, then look no further than the Acting Academy for Kids summer camp.

With two locations, and a dedicated and talented staff, AA4K encourages children ages 5 to 14 to sing, dance, and act their hearts out. At camp, students work together over five action-packed days to learn, practice, and perform a dazzling mini-musical for their friends and families by the end of the week.

If it sounds like a fast-paced, fun, and unforgettable experience; you’re right! Most of the camp counselors and activity directors are former campers who are home from college, doing what they love as a summer job. Stephen Zygo, founder and creative director of AA4K, says that seeing alumni return for summer jobs is immensely gratifying. The best part, he says, is seeing the shyest kids sing their first notes, break out of their shells, and shine on stage.

One camper, who was just five years old last year, loved it so much that he stayed with the theatre program all year long. The boy’s father told Stephen that AA4K camp was a life-changing experience. “He’s finally found his happy place,” says Stephen.

Now in its 15th year, AA4K’s summer camp runs for ten weeks in two locations: Irvine and Mission Viejo, at the corner of Alicia and Muirlands in the Vista Paint Plaza. Mission Viejo’s Z Playhouse is AA4K’s flagship venue, with a 115-seat theatre and state-of-the-art facilities like an LED video wall for Broadway-like projections, plus additional rooms for dance and concessions. In Irvine, the Lyceum Village community building provides a convenient location for parents who work or live in the area. Both venues are air-conditioned and family-safe.

Wondering what kind of music is performed? Students of the academic year full-scale musical vote on each theme, so the content is always familiar and kid-approved. This summer’s lineup includes popular movie and Broadway hits, plus two new shows inspired by blockbuster family movies that your kids will definitely know and love.

All levels of performers are welcome! “Summer camp is a great way to ‘test-drive’ theatre,” Stephen says. Kids are trained in singing, acting, dancing, and fusion, which ties all three disciplines together. If your child has performed in the past, this camp is a great way to reinforce their skills, help them grow as an artist, and, of course, make new friends.

Students who are unable to attend summer camp, but still want to immerse themselves in the performing arts, can participate in one of Acting Academy’s several academic year programs. Academic year students attend rehearsals and perform full-length musicals throughout the school year. The AA4K staff also offers private lessons for voice, piano, audition prep and TV/Film.

There are lots of new offerings, too! As more teens are learning about AA4K, they have found a home and a welcoming venue with their new teen-focused production for teens ages 13 to 17. These thespians will learn and perform a show inspired by a major Broadway hit. This summer it’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee! And for the jokesters in your family, the Mission Viejo location now hosts stand-up comedy classes for both kids and adults. Comedy has proved so popular that professional comedians have also started performing at the Playhouse.

Whether your child shows interest in the performing arts or is already honing their musical skills, Acting Academy for Kids is a safe and inclusive place to learn, make new friends and create memories that will last a lifetime. Summer camp registration is now open for 2022 at ActingAcademyForKids.com.

Planning For Your Next Chapter

MAKING STRIDES AS A YOUNG RETIREMENT COMMUNITY
Since opening in 2019, the community has welcomed over 500 new residents who call Reata Glen home. From expansive penthouses with sweeping views of rolling hills and single story villas to perfectly quaint one bedroom homes, this 480 home development has something for every taste. Each home is tailor-made to fit the lives of empty nesting baby boomers who want to enjoy life without the burden of home maintenance. “I went to every senior community in South Orange County to compare when I was looking to make a move,” says resident Kathy Allen, who chose to call Reata Glen home in 2019. “I’m pretty athletic and outgoing, and I wanted socialization. Reata Glen is the future of how my generation acts – we aren’t sitting at home alone feeling sorry for ourselves – we want to be active, healthy and going places. I see Reata Glen as a hybrid between a university, cruise ship and country club.”

Without the burdens of home maintenance and cooking every day, Kathy enjoys the multiple dining venues at Reata Glen; she now has the freedom and time to get involved in what she really cares about.

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES, AMENITIES AND ACTIVITIES STAND OUT
“You could be busier here than you’ve ever been in your life,” Kathy says with a smile. “More than I ever had been before.” With a fitness center, indoor pool, pickleball and tennis courts, woodshop, and activity rooms for educational, fine arts and fun classes, residents’ calendars are often full. “They go full bore for parties and events here, and there’s excellent food, too,” notes Katheryn. “I also walk a lot, go to the gym for a class called Crash Cardio and also write for the monthly newsletter.” It’s not just enjoying the activities and amenities on the Reata Glen campus, it’s the people you experience them with. “In the beginning, I didn’t know anyone,” Kathy says. “Now, it’s like being part of an extended family. I love being surrounded by people and friends and not having that alone feeling.”

IMAGINE YOUR IDEAL RETIREMENT COMMUNITY…
A gated neighborhood of single-story homes, condos, and apartments with a variety of convenient on-site amenities, services, and an adjacent health care center with long-term care services, should a future need arise. This is just how residents describe Reata Glen, Rancho Mission Viejo’s newest retirement community. Situated in a secluded, yet convenient Orange County location, beautiful rolling hills provide a stunning backdrop to each new day. It’s no wonder why readers of The Orange County Register voted Reata Glen the #1 retirement community in Orange County.

INTANGIBLES AND CULTURE MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
“As much as I love my coworkers, I love residents more,” says Karter Farris, who started as a dining server at Reata Glen, then transitioned to EMT safety officer after schooling. “To win Best in Orange County makes me very proud.” Karter’s team oversees security at the community, and she often wears many hats to serve residents’ needs. She’s a resident favorite, and some have labeled her as the happiest, bubbliest person they know. “The residents always make me smile,” Karter says. “Even if I come in and I’m not in the greatest mood, they say one thing and it brightens my day up, and I forget why I was bummed.” Recognized as a Great Place to Work by the Great Place to Work® Institute, Karter says the variety of job opportunities and the bonds with residents make it a fabulous place to start or continue a career. “There’s a spirit here – we care for each other,” Kathy says. “It is a community, and you feel connected.” Residents say they also feel safe – even during the challenging times recently. “Over and over, we’ve said we can’t imagine being anywhere but here when the pandemic hit,” Katheryn adds. “Management did an excellent job, we had peace of mind, and they made it interesting and fun with little surprises and creativity.”

THE REATA GLEN EXPERIENCE
It’s no coincidence the word Reata translates to a lasso or loop of rope – a fitting representation of the bonds that connect those who live and work at Reata Glen to each other. “Don’t wait – make the jump if you’re considering senior living and Reata Glen,” Kathy says. “Enjoy the fun – it’s a way of life that’s amazing. People thrive here.” Receive an exclusive invitation to attend a lunch presentation and learn about the Reata Glen experience. You can even meet Katheryn, Kathy or Karter firsthand. Enlightened Solar

San Clemente’s Power Specialists

by Victoria Kertz

There’s never been a better time to go solar. With California poised to reduce incentives for future solar panel installations, homeowners are rushing to install rooftop systems to beat the clock. The environmental benefits of solar are evident, but proposed legislation to increase electric bill rates and fees is a game changer for customers. If you’ve ever contemplated residential solar, now’s the opportune time to act.

In an analysis published last year, Morgan Stanley wrote that the proposed changes by the California Public Utilities Commission would “largely to completely eliminate the economic benefits of rooftop solar in California.” Fortunately, a grace period of about 90 to 120 days, during which customers can install solar panels and enjoy the financial benefits of previous years, goes into effect after the changes are approved in Sacramento.

Brett Jarman, co-founder of San Clemente-based Enlightened Solar, says the state’s proposed changes are generating a flurry of activity, but he and his team are ready for the rush. For 13 years, family-owned Enlightened Solar has led the way in professional and clean rooftop installations throughout Southern California. If you’ve ever noticed an unattractive solar panel setup, it wasn’t done by Enlightened. They’re known for creating some of the most beautiful rooftop systems under the sun, at equally attractive prices.

“Orange County is one of the best solar climates in the U.S.,” Brett says. “The location is almost always sunny and panels can be installed on any roof material and face any direction.” Brett is working diligently to meet with interested homeowners prior to when the new legislation goes into effect. “As long as a contract is signed before the state’s grace period ends, they can enjoy the environmental and financial benefits of solar,” he adds.

Brett wants customers to understand that solar installation isn’t exactly a weekend project. The entire process takes between 6 to 10 weeks, from signing a contract and drawing up engineering plans to getting permits and connecting the panels.

Enlightened’s team completes each stage of the project in-house, including the construction. Brett does not use subcontracted labor, and his busy team of 16 dedicated professionals is quickly growing. His team is committed to installing customized systems to suit the needs of each and every homeowner he serves.

“Solar is not a commodity,” Brett emphasizes. “The components that capture sunlight are, but who installs it, and how it’s installed are what matter most. Some installs cost the same,” he says, “but the finished product may look radically different based on the company that performed the work.”

“Solar is a complex, energy-generating home improvement,” Brett adds, and one that everyone sees when they pass by. He says it’s difficult to convey the importance of workmanship before an installation, but at the end of the day, homeowners generally don’t want to skimp on a large, roof-mounted design that, if done improperly, is something they could regret for the next 25 years.

No matter which solar company a homeowner chooses, Brett advises everyone to ask this difficult questions, especially when it comes to appearance. The educated sales team at Enlightened has detailed information, mock-ups, and more to give customers the peace of mind they need to move forward. Whether it’s financial or technical, the Enlightened team provides honest answers about what to expect with a solar system.

The natural benefits of solar, like pollution-free energy from a renewable source, are clear, but if you’re interested in panels for your house, call Brett and his trusted team at 949.426.7096.

Triton Air

Triton Air

Triton Air

Leaders in Service and Community

by Victoria Kertz

It’s safe to say that Triton Air is a company that stands out. Whether it’s their eye-catching Pacific blue service vans or the more than 1200 5-star Google reviews, this San Clemente-based heating and air service company simply blows the competition away. Known for excellent service, generous work with families in need, and campaigns like Lennox’s “Feel the Love,” Triton Air is unique.

Triton AirIn 2021, a year that didn’t exactly go as planned, Triton Air beat revenue projections, increased the number of employees, and acquired Ocean Air from the Kopp family in Laguna Niguel. But if you ask Mike Nicolai, founder of Triton Air, he’d say the highlight was his July trip to Malawi, Africa. In a remote part of the country, he and his wife Kim are working to fund a unique all-terrain, 4×4 ambulance used to transport expectant mothers and other women to the hospital. This area suffers from heavy rains, washed out dirt roads, and a high infant mortality rate due to the lack of dependable transportation. As a result, mothers often walk for miles or take an ox cart to the hospital in Livingstonia.

Working with the non-profit company Y-Malawi, Mike and Kim met with local hospital association leaders and residents who will benefit from the vehicle. “What’s so mind-blowing is the lack of funding for medicine and everyday items like bandages that we’re able to readily purchase,” says Mike. “It’s a whole different story in Malawi, a land-locked country that receives goods much slower than other African countries. They can teach us a lot about patience and gratitude.”

Here in Orange County, Triton Air has provided free services to nonprofits and families in need for years, but the Nicolai’s were still surprised to be recognized for their efforts when the company was named San Clemente Business of the Year. This is an honor that Mike attributes to his team’s consistent community involvement and dedication to clients during the lockdowns of 2020. His staff even volunteered to go grocery shopping for some of their customers. Mike calls the recognition a “lifetime achievement award; it really is an honor and we are blessed and so proud.” Triton Air was also named Most Popular in Orange County by the Los Angeles Times, ranked #1 in South County companies on Google, and was recently nominated for a Spire award.

Accolades aside, Mike says his customers always come first. As we head into cooler weather, he stressed the importance of scheduling a safety inspection of your furnace to prevent potential carbon monoxide issues. “You would never leave your car running in the garage because of the dangerous fumes,” he says, “but a very similar, and deadly, situation may result if gas fumes from your furnace leak into your house.” Triton Air technicians attend weekly training sessions that focus on the details of furnace safety and thorough inspections, thus ensuring that your system is running efficiently and safely.

For those who want to avoid carbon emissions of any kind, Mike explains that Triton Air offers new zero-emission heat pumps that both heat and cool your home without using gas. These pumps are powered by electricity and, for homes with solar panels installed, can heat and cool with power generated from the sun. These systems also offer a financial benefit by avoiding future local or state taxes on gas or fossil fuel-dependent appliances.

Ready to schedule an inspection? Call Triton Air today to create a healthier, safer, and cleaner environment for your family. Partner with a company that puts people first, both locally and internationally. Call 949-482-2492 or visit TritonAir.com.

RESORT SENIOR LIVING… ON THE COAST!

From the moment you walk through the doors at San Clemente Villas by the Sea, you’re welcomed by friendly smiles and a courteous staff who care. The luxury senior living facility is owned and operated by the Brazeau family, and this year they celebrate 19 years in business. Paul and his wife, Aileen, built the Villas in 2002. Following Paul’s passing in 2019, the family has carried on his tradition of delivering excellence and exemplary service, in a fun and friendly environment. To honor founder Paul Brazeau’s legacy, the family puts their hearts and souls into every aspect of making San Clemente Villas a warm and comfortable place for its residents, and the difference is evident.

San Clemente Villas is the only family-owned and operated assisted living community in Southern California. The Brazeau family plays an active role in the day-to-day operations at the Villas, and they are very involved in maintaining the high level of care and meeting the expectations their father established. Paul Brazeau often referred to San Clemente Villas by the Seas as “The cruise ship that never sets sail,” and it’s easy for visitors to understand why.

Beautiful, well-appointed apartments, some with coastal views, balconies or patios, offer residents ample living space with a coastal flair. Vaulted ceilings are also offered in many units, giving the spaces an expansive feel. The lavish, heated pool and jacuzzi boast an ocean view and provide opportunities for relaxation, poolside happy hours, special events, and outdoor exercise. An aqua therapist, available weekly, is also provided to residents at no additional charge.

San Clemente Villas offers month-to-month residential options, in comparison to the expensive buy-ins required at many other corporate-run retirement communities. Rates include fine dining with three delicious home-cooked meals daily, weekly housekeeping, bedding and bath laundry services, all utilities (except telephone and upgraded cable), an emergency alert system and much more. A scheduled transportation system assists residents in getting to and from local appointments, along with taking them to a wide array of activities, entertainment and social programs.

For residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, the Memory Care Unit provides one-on-one attention in a safe, healthy, and secure environment. With ample caregivers per shift, a dedicated nurse and medical technicians, seniors in this comprehensive program can be assured of 24- hour, individualized care from experienced specialists.

Paul’s son, Dan Brazeau, recently shared this message regarding his family’s appreciation for the outpouring of love and kindness they received after his father’s passing. “On behalf of our family, I would like to thank all of our residents, family members, local businesses and our beautiful San Clemente community for 19 years of support. With the passing of my father, Paul Brazeau, we lost the patriarch of our family. His dream was for San Clemente Villas to remain a family-owned and operated luxury senior care facility. I have owned and operated a successful assisted living facility in the Inland Empire since 2006. As a licensed RCFE Administrator, I was fortunate to be included in the location and development of San Clemente Villas — along with Paul’s wife Aileen Brazeau and my siblings, Mark Brazeau, Debbie Chapple, and Leslie Brazeau. After my father’s passing, I stepped in to oversee the operations. We have made many improvements this year, including our new Woody Surf Bus rolling around town! We have some big plans for renovations in 2022, including Paul’s Bistro and Wine Bar (my father loved his wine!). Our family will continue to provide excellent care and beautiful amenities for years to come. We invite you to stop by for one of our many COVID-safe happy hours or social events soon!”

Give San Clemente Villas by the Sea a call to learn more or to arrange a private tour of the community.

1-Day Whole House Repipe

by Victoria Kertz

South County RestorationIf you’ve ever had the misfortune of experiencing a slab leak or other plumbing disaster in your home, you know that partnering with the right contractor is invaluable. Water damage can quickly result in mold and other hazards that can wreak havoc on your health and home.

Before calling your insurance provider, contact Casey McCants, owner of South County Restoration in San Clemente. Casey assists with filing your claim and advocates on your behalf to ensure proper reimbursement. Since 2008, his team of dedicated professionals has been providing emergency water remediation and restoration, but he knows that working with insurers can be just as messy. That’s why Casey shares his time and expertise to maximize outcomes and minimize hassles for clients.

“He knows what to ask for,” Annmarie McCants explains. If it’s necessary for you to relocate to a hotel while the house is uninhabitable, Casey fights to make sure your living expenses are covered. “He spends hours on the phone. It takes legwork.”

“Insurance companies want you to use their vendors and do the least amount of work to prevent another leak,” says Casey. That’s where South Country Restoration stands out. His team conducts a thorough investigation of the damage, suggests a long-term solution, and works to make sure the work is done correctly. Whether the job requires demolition, mold removal, or a basic dry-out, the company is committed to returning your family quickly to a safe and healthy home.

Casey knows firsthand how devastating pinhole and slabs leaks can be. The water damage that occurred to his own home, along with the exorbitant fees that big box restoration companies charge, is what inspired him to expand his business and add a dedicated team for repiping homes. Now, South County Restoration is the ultimate one-stop shop, offering repipe service, water damage restoration, and Casey himself, as an expert who helps you file insurance claims to recover the compensation you deserve.

If you’ve been in your home longer than 10 years, or if your neighbor just repiped, it may be time for you to do the same. Casey’s team reports to your home at 8 a.m., covers everything in plastic, repipes your home, and provides you with running water that very night.

South County Restoration utilizes cross-linked polyethylene, better known as PEX, to bypass or replace existing pipes. PEX tubing is flexible and can be directly routed to where it needs to go. This reduces the need to make joints and turns and improves water pressure. A PEX repipe prevents future leaks and is designed to last a lifetime.

Another team comes in to repair the drywall, typically two days later. They also perform mitigation services, thoroughly clean and abate the area, conduct mold and asbestos testing, and provide moving and storage, as required. Only South County Restoration can repipe your home and repair the walls in as little as three days.

Big box providers don’t have the time or inclination to partner with clients down to the details, but South County Restoration has and always will be a customer-centric, community-based company. Helping neighbors recover from water damage so they receive prompt compensation from their insurer is what Casey’s team does best.

Helping You Maintain Optimal Breast Health
Whether you’re visiting MemorialCare Breast Centers for a routine mammogram or with needs that are more urgent, the goal is to help you maintain optimal breast health. A multi-disciplinary team of breast care clinicians, all with sub-specialized training and extensive experience, take a comprehensive, coordinated approach to treating breast cancer to ensure the optimal quality of care.

COVID-19 Vaccines and Mammograms
The COVID-19 vaccine, like other vaccinations, stimulates your immune system. This can cause a temporary enlargement of lymph nodes near where the person was vaccinated. Those lymph nodes can sometimes be seen by the radiologist reading your mammogram and make it appear to be abnormal, even when there is no indication of cancer. Since enlarged lymph nodes can result in a “false positive” on your mammogram, you could get a request to return for further testing — a call-back — which can be unsettling.

Therefore, mammograms should be scheduled before your first dose of a COVID-19 vaccination or four to six weeks after the last dose. That way, there is time for your lymph nodes to return to their normal size. As with any testing recommended by your healthcare provider, women age 40 and above should not delay recommended mammographic screening.

To schedule your mammogram, call 949-452-7200.

Sendero Dental Studio

Sendero Dental Studio

Your Family Dentist

by Victoria Kertz

Sendero Dental StudioImagine a dentist’s office with cozy, spa-like interiors, soft lighting, and a staff so warm and friendly that upon entering, you gain an instant sense of calm. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? Discover this peaceful experience at Sendero Dental Studio in Rancho Mission Viejo — an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life and a uniquely tranquil setting for your next dental appointment. It’s also home to one of the best-reviewed dentists in South Orange County.

Dr. Jeffrey Barrera launched Sendero Dental Studio as an intimate alternative to his existing Rancho Santa Margarita office, a large and very busy location that’s tidied up the teeth of hundreds of local families for decades. While both sites boast state-of-the-art dental equipment, the latest treatments and a knowledgeable staff, the new studio is significantly smaller and quieter. Designed for maximum relaxation and comfort, Sendero’s minimalist décor, in neutral shades of white and grey, feels less like a scene for a root canal and more like the lobby of a luxury resort.

Aesthetics aside, Dr. Barrera’s top priority is to provide personalized, best-in-class dental and cosmetic procedures that deliver optimal results. Patients at Sendero Dental Studio feel confident knowing that Dr. Barrera has nearly 30 years of experience and offers both pediatric and adult general dental care, so the entire family is able to receive cleanings and check-ups in one convenient location. For those interested in Invisalign, he is one in a select group of dentists who has completed Dr. David Galler’s elite Invisalign training.

Dr. Barrera’s true passion is cosmetic dentistry. He offers dental crowns, bridges, veneers, and repositions teeth in a fashion that makes them look perfectly straight. He also provides full-mouth reconstruction and dentures. For dental implants, he partners with top regional specialists with expertise in the field.

Not sure which service is right for you? Each new patient receives a total dental health consultation to discuss treatment options and how lifestyle and nutrition play a role in oral wellness. When the time comes to select a treatment plan, Dr. Barrera’s office utilizes the most advanced digital imaging and lab technology so patients can visualize their post-procedure results. This makes the decision-making process much easier, because predictable results create more satisfied patients.

It’s those same happy patients who rave about their experience with Sendero’s delightful staff and award them five star reviews on Yelp and social media. “I’m blessed to have an experienced staff,” enthuses Dr. Barrera. “We are like family and we try our best to always be respectful of a patient’s time.”

From the friendly front desk to skilled hygienists, the entire office is committed to helping patients achieve a healthy and beautiful smile. “We’re changing peoples’ lives by giving them something that they’ve never had. We celebrate the process when a patient completes that work,” says Dr. Barrera. “The integrity of our dentistry is extremely important. We’re here to support the community and earn their trust.”

In Rancho Mission Viejo, the Sendero team actively participates in a variety of organizations and supports nearby sports teams. “We love what we do here and are so happy to be a part of the community. We’re ready to grow with it and are excited to see where it goes,” shares Dr. Barrera.

If you’re looking for a dentist who values your time and has decades of experience to treat your smile with the utmost care, Dr. Barrera would like to hear from you. Whether you’re in need of an annual cleaning or want to dramatically improve your smile, you’re invited to stop by, ask questions, or just say hello. Find Sendero Dental Studio’s new space in the Gelson’s shopping center at Ortega Highway and Antonio Parkway.
