San Clemente Car Show

San Clemente Car Show

Good old-fashioned family fun is just around the bend at the San Clemente Car Show on Saturday, June 8th. This year marks the 28th anniversary of this popular downtown event, and the excitement is palpable.

Visitors will be greeted by the nostalgic hum of engines and the vibrant energy of car enthusiasts. Over 250 unique and lovingly-restored show cars will be on display from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — classics, woodies, muscle cars, hot rods, street rods, surf vans, convertibles, exotics, and even vintage camping trailers — all vying to win best in their class. Non-profit and retail vendor booths will also dot the venue, offering a delightful array of goods and services.

The opening ceremony promises to be a poignant start to the festivities with the US Marines Color Guard and COA singers kicking off the show. As visitors stroll down historic Avenida Del Mar, The Chancers, a popular local band, will provide the perfect musical backdrop. Shops and restaurants along the avenue will be open for business, offering everything from delectable bites to unique finds.

To make the day even more stress-free, guests can leave their parking worries behind and arrive by trolley. The San Clemente Car Show is hosted by the non-profit San Clemente Downtown Business Association, with proceeds supporting local businesses, non-profits, and downtown initiatives.

San Clemente Downtown Business Association deeply appreciates the support of their fantastic community partners — Capistrano Valley Toyota, Tuttle-Click Capistrano Ford, Capistrano VW/Mazda & Nissan of San Juan Capistrano. Contributions make events like this possible.

For more information, visit www.SCCarShow.com. The community looks forward to seeing everyone downtown, San Clemente!

Local Retirement Community Celebrates Milestone Anniversary

AWARD-WINNING LIFESTYLE

In the hills of South Orange County sits Reata Glen, a 60-acre Life Plan Community designed for seniors who want to stay active and engaged.

Reata Glen first opened its doors five years ago and has already made a substantial impact. Readers of The Orange County Register voted the community the best in Orange County for three years in a row, and residents can’t stop raving about the wonderful lifestyle.

With resort-like amenities, beautiful, maintenance-free homes and hundreds of classes, clubs and activities to choose from, there’s never a dull moment at Reata Glen. Residents spend their days relaxing by the pool, playing friendly games of pickleball, and enjoying delicious cuisine at the several on-site dining venues. It’s all with the gorgeous backdrop of rolling hills and beautiful landscaping that make the community even more vibrant.

Of course, no retirement lifestyle is complete without a plan for the future. Savvy seniors choose Reata Glen because they know they’ll have priority access to the adjacent health center for assisted living, memory care and long-term care in a skilled nursing center, if ever needed. This gives them peace of mind as they enjoy their golden years, making the most out of life now that they don’t have to worry about the hassles of home and yard maintenance.

FIVE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Local seniors are invited to celebrate the five-year anniversary at the Reata Glen Rock and Walk. The Reata Glen team has organized the event so older adults in the area can experience the community for themselves, chat with team members and residents, and get a feel for the award-winning lifestyle offered each day.

After check-in at 9 a.m., attendees will go on a self-guided walk, trot or run through the beautiful campus, and stop at lively stations along the way that offer refreshing drinks, gifts and a chance to meet the Reata Glen team. After getting some exercise and fresh air, guests will reward themselves with a post-event party featuring a concert by Margaritaville, a Jimmy Buffett tribute band, and burgers served from an In-N-Out truck.

Rock and Walk anniversary events are available only to guests with confirmed reservations.

Seniors who are interested in Reata Glen or want to fill their morning with fun call 949-771-7896 for the event date and to RSVP to the Rock and Walk.

Bluestone Lane Coffee

Bluestone Lane Coffee

Bluestone Lane Coffee

by Dina Scaglione

“Mateship” …may be an unfamiliar term in South Orange County, but once you step inside the comfy ocean vibe of Bluestone Lane Coffee, the meaning of this phrase will become abundantly clear. Unlike most grab-and-go places, this Australian-based cafe with cheerful baristas who welcome you as “hey mate,” invites you to pause and soak in the laid-back culture of Down Under. Situated on Del Mar in prime San Clemente, where espresso-style coffees are served savory and strong, meant to be sipped s-l-o-w-l-y.

For fans of traditional brews including lattes, cappuccinos, and espressos, Bluestone has it all. The Flat White, with a delicate layer of foam, offers a melodious and smooth experience that comes highly recommended. Tea lovers can explore a variety of organic teas such as classic Earl Grey, Sencha Green tea, Chamomile, Peppermint, Lemongrass, Ginger, or the Melbourne Breakfast blend. They also offer an assortment of cold-pressed juices like the Portsea, featuring cucumber, apple, kale, lemon, ginger root, and spinach. Alternatively, choose from a range of mouthwatering smoothies like the refreshing Berry Brekkie, blended with strawberry, blueberry, banana, lemon juice, honey, oat milk, and a hint of mint.

For a light meal or sumptuous “brekkie,” indulge in the Avocado Toast with the Lot—a perfect treat where multigrain toast is generously layered with avocado, feta, tomatoes, prosciutto, and topped with microgreens. The Feel Good Salad lives up to its name with premier ingredients including arugula, cherry tomatoes, avocado, tart pickled onions, crumbled cashews, dried cranberry, and aromatic dill accompanied by a light lemon vinaigrette. Craving a high-protein option? The Sunshine Burrito features scrambled eggs, spinach, bacon, avocado, cheddar cheese, and dill mayo—a truly satisfying choice.

In our hurried lives, grabbing a good old cup of Joe can often feel transactional, but here, patrons are encouraged to hunker down and stay awhile. Whether it’s to read, work, hang out with friends, enjoy a delicious snack, or simply chill for a bit, Bluestone Lane fosters an atmosphere of relaxation and enjoyment. Open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with more than 60 locations across the US and roots hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Bluestone Lane beautifully personifies the region’s distinct and rich coffee culture.

Acting Academy for Kids & Teens

Acting Academy for Kids & Teens

Acting Academy for Kids & Teens

Sign up for Summer Camps

by Victoria Kertz

Acting Academy for Kids & TeensWith summer months just around the corner, now is the perfect time to plan a fun, creative routine for children and teens. The Acting Academy for Kids & Teens (AA4K) is now open for summer camp registration, and this summer’s weeklong stage productions offer so many new opportunities for your kids to shine!

Founder Stephen Zygo is thrilled to introduce five new musicals for young voices, Barbie and Ken, Wonka, Trolls 3, Mean Girls, and WISH Upon a Star, plus returning favorites Matilda and Harry Potter. With camps from June 3 through August 9, kids (ages 5 to 14) are welcome for one week, all 10 weeks, or anything in between. AA4K is truly where the summer meets the stage — it’s all about bright lights, bright futures, and delightful productions that the whole family will love. There are life lessons, too… theatre camps build strong, resilient performers who learn to overcome challenges that come their way.

This summer is particularly special for Stephen as his son will be making his return to the Z Playhouse stage per his request since he had so much fun last summer! He dreamed of the day when he would see his own children perform at AA4K, and he’s delighted that they can join dozens of theatre-loving kids in a place that makes them (and everyone) feel very comfortable. Always a safe space for students and kids, camps will again occur at the Z Playhouse in Mission Viejo and Lyceum Village in Irvine. “Both places create a space that feels like a second home,” Stephen says.

The local longtime camp has not only produced theatre majors who return each summer to be counselors but has also unlocked professional opportunities for some very talented students. Three of Stephen’s students were recently cast in an upcoming Netflix show, and others have moved on to pursue studies and careers in the arts. One camper’s parent told him AA4K camps changed her daughter’s life. “She told me, ‘My daughter loves being part of your theatre. It’s everything to her.’ I mean, WOW!” he recalls. There’s plenty of positivity, creativity, and good energy in each fun-filled week.

Yet, at AA4K, it’s not just summer camps—theatre is a yearlong production! Teen auditions are right around the corner for their summer production of Urinetown, an adapted and teen-appropriate show that runs from June through August while High School students are on summer break. Musicals continue through the Fall, Winter and Spring with sessions that will take on more full-length shows. These seasonal programs are designed to let students take their love and experiences in musical theatre to the next level.

The only category that takes a break in summer is the recently reinvigorated TV and Film Department, AA4K Studios, the only Orange County program offering IMDB credit for locally produced films starring students. “We are one of the only programs creating film and TV magic for kids,” said Courtney Yamanishi, AA4K Studios Director, about the hands-on program, which includes access to state-of-the-art cameras, lighting, and a real-world working Hollywood film crew. Kids love it because they aren’t just acting; they’re learning the craft of filmmaking.

The Z Playhouse is busy and bustling at any time of year. It hosts full-scale children’s and adult productions, piano and voice lessons, and even stand-up comedy shows.

For those eager to enroll or seek further information about AA4K, a visit to ActingAcademyForKids.com or a call to 949-427-0072 is all it takes. Aspiring directors, choreographers, or summer camp counselors are encouraged to email ActingAcademy4Kids@gmail.com with their resumes. Give your kids a sprinkle of theatrical magic—start planning now for an unforgettable experience.

Together4Teens 2024

Together4Teens

Together4Teens 2024

An event for youth and parents to navigate the challenges that teens face today!

In 2019, a group of organizations and youth came together to create an event that brought awareness to the pressures and challenges of today’s teens. The committee included teens, mental health and healthcare organizations, and substance use prevention organizations. The event, Together4Teens, allowed teens and parents to talk with mental health professionals and community organizations, attend brief workshops, and learn about nearby resources and services. Due to its ability to successfully reach members of the community, Together4Teens became a recurring, annual event. The Wellness & Prevention Center, in partnership with the Orange County Health Care Agency, is excited to announce the next Together4Teens event on Saturday, April 13th at Capistrano Valley High School in Mission Viejo from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

We are honored to have Larissa May, a young adult who founded #HalfTheStory, as our keynote speaker. As the first youth-led nonprofit of its kind, #HalfTheStory is focused on educating, advocating, and mitigating the harms associated with social media and technology use. Following the keynote speaker, teens and parents can attend workshops, and at the end, attend a teen panel discussion. Workshops will include important topics including teen digital wellness, building self-esteem, youth mental health education, supporting LGBTQ+ youth, mindful yoga, journaling, and more! The workshop presenters are highly regarded in the community, and dedicated to helping youths improve their mental wellness so they can lead healthier, happier lives. Both youth and parents will leave equipped with knowledge, skills, and resources to navigate the challenges of growing up today.

Attendees will not only be able to visit resource tables and workshops, and engage with community organizations, but will also be served complimentary lunch from TK Burgers! We hope you’ll join us for another year of fun, learning, and community connection with our local teens and parents.

The event is recommended for children ages 12 years and up, their parents, caregivers, and other community members who work with youth. Follow Together4Teens on Instagram for more information. Register for this event at bit.ly/T4T2024.

Nothing Bundt Cakes

Nothing Bundt Cakes

Nothing Bundt Cakes

Cake Changes Everything

In need of a reason to celebrate? Look no further than the place known for celebrations, Nothing Bundt Cakes! Local bakery owners, Misty La Force and Annamarie Megrdichian, have been sharing celebrations in Southern California since 2016. In July 2023, they joined forces with their longtime friend, Christina Foley, and purchased the San Clemente bakery. Together, these ladies are making joyful history!

To find the perfect recipe, one first needs the perfect ingredients. And that’s exactly what founders Dena Tripp and Debbie Schwetz were for each other. In 1997, they joined forces, or better yet, kitchens, to make cakes to entertain their friends and family. The cakes they made were delicious, unlike anything anyone had ever tasted. As a result, their friends and family asked them to entertain more and more. They quickly realized that this side project of theirs could be something more. There was a gap in the world for delicious cakes, readily available, that didn’t compromise on their ingredients. Fresh eggs, real butter, and real cream cheese, nothing was too good to achieve perfection. And perfection is those decadent, slowly melting bites of joy we all know and love.

Flash forward 27 years later, there are more than 500 bakeries operating, and at least 100 more are planned to open in the next year in the United States and Canada. This little “side gig” of theirs has truly become a mainstay in the world of celebrations.

Bringing joy to the San Clemente area is what drives this high-powered partnership. “We couldn’t be prouder of our success and the positive atmosphere that our team brings to our guests every day!” states owner Annamarie Megrdichian. Co-owner, Misty La Force, noddingly agrees and adds, “I attribute our success to a great team, fabulous guests, and a quality product.” Offering four convenient sizes and ten delectable flavors, including a favorite Gluten-free flavor, Nothing Bundt Cakes does not disappoint. The super moist, delicious cakes provide a tasteful addition to any celebration, party, or just because. Guests are sold with their first, life-altering bite of our scrumptious product!

Led by owner/operator, Christina Foley, the San Clemente bakery team members bring a welcoming, yet nostalgic experience to all who enter its doors. The friendly staff is there daily to greet guests, and besides the delicious cakes, they offer a wide variety of unique gift items and hand-crafted cake decorations for any occasion.

Owner/Operator Christina Foley is the perfect example of how hard work pays off. She is usually at the bakery before her team, preparing for the day and planning her marketing efforts throughout the community. “Joining forces with these two proven bakery owners was the best decision I could ever have made,” states Ms. Foley. “I’m so excited that we are able to bring the joy to our local community. We love how our new fundraising model is providing a wonderful avenue to raise funds for local non-profits, schools, and organizations in our town.”

It doesn’t end there. The San Clemente bakery is getting ready to commence the new “Books and Bundts” reading program for local youth. This new program provides a free bundtlet for every 40 hours of reading a child completes, demonstrating another way that Nothing Bundt Cakes is changing lives and encouraging students to excel.

Nothing Bundt Cakes in San Clemente is open every day. If you have not been in to visit, they invite you to share in the joy! If it’s been a while, please come back and reward yourself. You will not be sorry. The bakery is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

They eagerly anticipate your visit and the opportunity to share the joy with you!
