St. Edward The Confessor School

St. Edward The Confessor School
A DYNAMIC SCHOOLWIDE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

St. Edward The Confessor School

Faithful to Catholic values, St. Edward the Confessor Parish School (Preschool – 8th Grade) offers a dynamic schoolwide learning environment that inspires each student to achieve his or her God-given potential inside and outside the classroom. Through rigorous academics, innovative and creative curriculum, service opportunities and Catholic values, Monarchs are confident and compassionate students who are Always Learning and make a difference well beyond their St. Edward years.

SAFE, FULL-TIME IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION
Since September, St. Edward has offered fulltime, in-person instruction for preschool – 8th grade. Reduced class sizes, self-contained classrooms (TYKE – 6th grade) and learning cohorts has ensured that students can continue to attend school in-person, five days a week. COVID-19 safety measures include protective plastic desk barriers, required face coverings, hand washing and sanitizing stations, physical distancing in classrooms and at lunch tables, daily electrostatic classroom disinfection and eliminating shared materials and devices.

Should the school need to pivot to remote learning due to state or Diocesan guidelines, or for those students who choose Optional Distance Learning, St. Edward uses streaming technology and a robust learning management system to ensure students receive live, full-time instruction five days a week.

ALWAYS LEARNING
St. Edward students are #AlwaysLearning. Students don’t just memorize math equations or recite spelling words. They ask questions. They explore. They love not just school – but the process of learning. And learning comes not just through doing things right, but through doing things wrong. We develop resilient, innovative learners who try, grow and achieve.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
St. Edward utilizes a standard-based curriculum aligned to the Roman Catholic Church teachings which prepares learners for high school and beyond. The faculty and staff continually expose learners to meaningful hands-on experiences, resulting in thoughtful risk-taking, problem solving and collaboration.

CREATIVITY
Through art and music classes and afterschool activities, The Parish School builds creative and confident leaders. It’s also one of the only elementary schools to offer Makerspace – a hands-on studio that integrates technology, engineering and creativity with project-based solutions to real-world situations.

FAITH DEVELOPMENT
Each day, the school community prays, serves and grows in their relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It is present in the books they read, the history they teach, and the music they sing. Students attend weekly Mass, participate in hands-on service projects, and provide mentorship through Prayer Partners.

San Clemente Villas By The Sea

San Clemente Villas By The Sea

San Clemente Villas By The Sea

Our Family Caring For Your Family

From the moment you walk through the doors at San Clemente Villas by the Sea, you’re welcomed by friendly smiles and a courteous staff who care. The luxury senior living facility is owned and operated by the Brazeau family, and this year they celebrate 18 years in business. Paul and his wife, Aileen, built the Villas in 2002. Following Paul’s passing last year, the family has carried on his tradition of delivering excellence and exemplary service, in a fun and friendly environment. To honor founder Paul Brazeau’s legacy, the family puts their hearts and souls into every aspect of making San Clemente Villas a warm and comfortable place for its residents, and the difference is evident.

San Clemente Villas is the only family owned and operated assisted living community in Southern California. The Brazeau family plays an active role in the day-to-day operations at the Villas, and they are very involved in maintaining the high level of care and meeting the expectations their father established. Paul Brazeau often referred to San Clemente Villas by the Seas as “The cruise ship that never sets sail,” and it’s easy for visitors to understand why.

Beautiful, well-appointed apartments, some with coastal views, balconies or patios, offer residents ample living space with a coastal flair. Vaulted ceilings are also offered in many units, giving the spaces and expansive feel. The lavish, heated pool and jacuzzi boast an ocean view and provide opportunities for relaxation, poolside happy hours, special events, and outdoor exercise. An aqua therapist, available weekly, is also provided to residents at no additional charge.

San Clemente Villas offers month-to-month residential options, in comparison to the expensive buy-ins required at many other corporate-run retirement communities. Rates include fine dining with three delicious home-cooked meals daily, weekly housekeeping, bedding and bath laundry services, all utilities (except telephone and upgraded cable), an emergency alert system and much more. A scheduled transportation system assists residents in getting to and from local appointments, along with taking them to a wide array of activities, entertainers and social programs.

For residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, the Memory Care Unit provides one-on-one attention in a safe, healthy, and secure environment. With ample caregivers per shift, a dedicated nurse and medical technicians, seniors in this comprehensive program can be assured of 24-hour, individualized care from experienced specialists.

Paul’s son, Dan Brazeau, recently shared this message regarding his family’s appreciation for the outpouring of love and kindness they received after his father’s passing. “On behalf of our family, I would like to thank all of our residents, family members, local businesses and our beautiful San Clemente community for 18 years of support. With the passing of my father, Paul Brazeau, we lost the patriarch of our family. His dream was for San Clemente Villas to remain a family-owned and operated luxury senior care facility. I have owned and operated a successful assisted living facility in the Inland Empire since 2006. As a licensed RCFE Administrator, I was fortunate to be included in the location and development of San Clemente Villas — along with Paul’s wife Aileen Brazeau and my siblings, Mark Brazeau, Debbie Chapple, and Leslie Brazeau. After my father’s passing, I stepped in to oversee the operations. We have made many improvements this year, including our new Woody Surf Bus rolling around town! We have some big plans for renovations in 2021, including Paul’s Bistro and Wine Bar (my father loved his wine!). Our family will continue to provide excellent care and beautiful amenities for years to come. We invite you to stop by for one of our many COVID-safe happy hours or social events soon!”

Give San Clemente Villas by the Sea a call to learn more or to arrange a private tour of the community.

Your Ticket to Ride

Victoria Kertz

CycleogicalNo gym? No problem. The great outdoors awaits and Cycleogical has your ticket to ride. With hundreds of miles of South OC trails boasting picturesque views and vistas, now’s the time to gear up and get rolling. Whether you enjoy leisurely cruises with the family, want a challenging workout, or seek an opportunity to explore your surroundings while getting some fresh air, owners Bill and Melissa Mol will fit you with just the right bike to suit your needs.

Dana Point’s premier bike shop, conveniently located near La Plaza Park, is stocked with everything you’ll need to hit the open road. As the pandemic made its mark on every business this year, Bill and Melissa anticipated a surge in demand for cycling and prepared for the eventuality that followed. In early February, the Mol’s staffed up and ramped up inventories to meet the needs of the local community, but the level of interest even surpassed their projections. When gyms and offices closed, customers poured in for everything from bike maintenance to road bikes and e-bikes. Mountain bikes flew off the racks, and in just the first four days of California’s lockdown, the most affordable models were completely sold out.

With inventories replenished, Bill is thrilled to see a continued enthusiasm for cycling. As he points out, you can ride year-round in Southern California while getting a workout and enjoying the outdoors. He and Melissa are passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles, and the resurgence in cycling (or riding, as mountain bikers say) has been fueled by the recent desire for alternatives to indoor or densely packed activities.

It was a shared passion for biking that led the Mols to say goodbye to corporate jobs and open Cycleogical, a name that Melissa coined. “We’ve always wanted to do our own thing,” Melissa says. “We’re lucky to have a great staff and a good sense of family,” she adds.

Cyclelogical offers all manner of bikes, from sleek road frames to electric styles and rugged mountain varieties, as well as every accessory and part a cyclist could imagine. With an unprecedented demand for maintenance and repairs in past months, Bill says parts like tubes and tires are difficult to secure, so he proactively sources them from all over the country. It’s this level of commitment that enables Cycleogical to offer a high level of service, such as a quick, 24 to 48 hour turnaround for repairs.

Their service team (some of whom have been there since doors opened) are an integral part of the customer loyalty the company has cultivated. The newest addition to the service department isn’t a person, though; it’s a heavy-duty lift that allows the team to service and repair e-bikes, which typically weigh too much for other shops to handle. In fact, the Mols are in the development stage of a store-branded e-bike they expect will be available next year.

Cycleogical is also finding creative ways to host organized charity rides like it’s done in the past. The Mols have sponsored annual events such as the Dana Point Grand Prix and Kids on Wheels, both of which raise funds for new bikes that are donated to the Boys and Girls Club of the South Coast Area. Due to social distancing guidelines, the Mols have opted to sponsor a Virtual Ride Challenge this year. Proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club, and will also be used to incentivize kids to participate by offering a range of prizes. “We want to encourage kids to get outside,” Melissa says of the new event. “They say it only takes three weeks for healthy lifestyle changes to become habits.” Fortunately, the same is true for adults!

Start your cardio routine with a new bike or check one out for a family member. Premium brands like Cannondale, Santa Cruz, Yeti, and Pivot are in stock and waiting for you at Cycleogical. And with the holidays right around the corner, it’s the perfect place to shop local and support a family-owned business.

No matter what kind of bike the cyclist in your life rides, Cycleogical has a high-tech accessory, helmet, or car rack to give this season. The friendly and knowledgeable staff will help you make the best decision, and don’t forget to say hello to the resident, shop dog, Ryder. The sweet, standard poodle is always on hand when the Mols are in the shop.

TANNINS Restaurant & Wine Bar

TANNINS Restaurant & Wine Bar

TANNINS Restaurant & Wine Bar

by Dina Scaglione

Most foodies would agree; a good meal should be an experience savored and enjoyed, a time to marinate over palatable flavors and hearty conversation with friends. For nearly 20 years, Tannins Restaurant & Wine Bar, in San Juan Capistrano, has facilitated this type of dining experience with its authentic southern Italian fare, fueled by superb wine and a contemporary, welcoming vibe. Committed to the definitive dining experience, Tannins offers interesting wine and food pairings, with over 40 varietals to choose from. Five years ago, Cordon Bleu trained, and certified Master Chef Marc Cummings took over Tannins’ kitchen, breathing new life into the menu and transforming it into something worth writing home about.

Kick off your meal with the tender Calamari Fritti, delicately fried and accompanied by a fiery Arrabbiata dipping sauce for a melt-in-your-mouth experience. The Tannins salad with garbanzo beans, shallots, capers and avocado, drizzled with a citrusy Poppy seed dressing, is the perfect starter — with or without the addition of chicken, salmon or shrimp. Then, there’s the pasta… authentically and unpretentiously prepared from Old World recipes. The signature Pancetta Carbonara, crafted from pan-fried pancetta, freshly cracked egg and finely grated Pecorino is a longstanding favorite. The Fettuccini Toscana is another popular dish featuring sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts and blackened chicken, amid a flavorful cream sauce. Like many classic Italian restaurants, Tannins also serves up tasty pizzas from the traditional Margarita with Roma tomatoes and aromatic basil to its Barbeque Chicken and Gourmet Veggie Pizza. Desserts are prepared fresh daily by a local pastry chef and include a delightfully moist carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and the elegant Tiramisu.

Tannins has met the challenges of COVID-19 head on by updating its lively indoor bar and wine cellar, cozy wine cave, inside dining and expanded covered patio areas to allow for safe and comfortable social distancing. Visit Tannins for your next meal or special occasion and enjoy the ambiance and its distinctly flavorful cuisine. Open daily for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and for dinner from 4 to 9 p.m.

With a rich history in medical practice and awards, including the Charles H. His practice has used stem cells and regenerative medicine to significantly heal patients suffering from ALS, Alzheimer’s and Dementia, Chronic Pain, Strokes and Traumatic Brain Injury, Heart Disease and Cerebral Palsy.

The doctor has also created a revolutionary supplement called Stemgevity which utilizes encapsulated stem cell growth activators to help patients relieve pain, promote tissue regeneration, stimulate collagen, and see fast results in overall youth-factors.

Today, Dr. Steenblock practices medicine in his 7400 square foot medical clinic overlooking the ocean. His clinic is well equipped with a variety of medical devices designed to “turn on” 760 different genes involved with helping stem cells form new blood vessels for the growth, repair, and regeneration of damaged, diseased and senescent tissues.
