Dale Velzy Remembered!
30th Annual Surf Classic Named in Velzy’s Honor
To be held September 21, 2019 at Doheny State Park
DANA POINT, CA SEPTEMBER 21ST, 2019 – The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association (DLSA) will be hosting its annual DALE VELZY SURF CLASSIC AND LUAU at Doheny State Beach. Each year, hundreds of surfers and their families gather at Doheny State Beach to honor one of surfing’s most iconic figures.
Dale Velzy’s influence on surfing is still wide-spread and full of colorful stories. In Malcolm Gault-Williams’ website information on Velzy, he quotes several surf legend remembrances: “Without Velzy,” said surfboard shaper Donald Takayama, “there wouldn’t be a modern-day longboard. Basically, what the shortboard people are making with the wider tails and the abruptly pulled in noses are just a takeoff on Dale’s bump boards.” “We were all kamikaze pilots, going on our last mission and Velzy ran the airport!” said Henry Ford about the gremmies that grew up to be legends and who apprenticed under Velzy.
Velzy unfortunately passed away in 2005 yet is still a very special person in the hearts of many surfers; this is especially true to the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association. DLSA has been honored to host this venue for many years. Dale enjoyed many things in life, but mostly having fun with family and friends. It is in this spirit that the DLSA holds this annual event. The open venue has many aspects to enjoy; everything from the classic Surf Contest to the Luau to the Polynesian Review to dancing under the stars at Doheny with a live band!
Everything is in place to make this year’s program a very special one indeed; especially since it is the 30th Annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic and Luau. This year’s event starts off with the Surf Classic starting at 6:30 am. The Luau festivities will begin around 3p.m., followed by the Polynesian Review, Surf Contest Awards Ceremony, Raffles and dancing under the stars.
