The Ancient Art of Sugaring

Dating back to 1450 B.C, hair removal was of extreme importance. It was associated with royalty. Hair on the body was seen as a sign of poverty and uncleanliness. Ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece placed a high value on aesthetic practices.

Mesopotamian Kings requested only clean and hairless women in their presence. Early hieroglyphics in Egypt depict women removing body hair in order to be able to serve their pharaoh. All women of royalty in the Turkish Empire, as well as women in the harem were expected to be hairless and considered the removal of body hair an art.

Cleopatra, well known for her beauty, also used sugaring as her method for hair removal.
