A Taste of San Juan

Taste of San JuanOne of the highlights of the Fiesta de las Golondrinas season is the annual Taste of San Juan. This festive event will be held on Wednesday, February 16th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the historic El Adobe Restaurant in downtown San Juan Capistrano. Billed as the kick-off celebration of the return of the swallows, the Taste of San Juan is the first of many events leading up to the Swallows Day Parade and Mercado Street Fair.

Delightful dishes from over twenty local restaurants and dancing to live country music will make for an evening of great food and fun. Some of the local restaurants featured at this year’s event include L’Hirondelle, Ricardo’s Place, Sundried Tomato Café, The Vintage Steakhouse, Marbella Farmers Market, Sarducci’s Café, Thai Juan On, Simply Fondue, O’Neill’s Bar and Grill, NYC Café and Catering, Donna B’s Bakery and Akioni’s Catering. Under one roof, tastes from these and other area establishments will tempt guests with their signature fare.

The Laguna Playhouse: Featuring Hershey Felder in Maestro

The oldest theatre on the West Coast celebrates its 90th year of bringing stellar theatre to Orange County. The 2010-2011 season is no different, filled with wonderful comedies, musicals and one-of-a-kind productions.

The Laguna Playhouse kicks off 2011 with internationally acclaimed actor, playwright and Steinway concert artist Hershey Felder in MAESTRO: The Art of Leonard Bernstein. This new work, from the creators of George Gershwin Alone, Monsieur Chopin and Beethoven, As I Knew Him, runs from January 4th through February 6th.

With a story spanning the entire twentieth century, Leonard Bernstein, America’s greatest musician, broke through every artistic ceiling possible to become the world’s musical ambassador. As a conductor, composer, pianist, author, teacher, librettist and television star, Leonard Bernstein knew no boundaries. Hershey Felder takes audiences on a fascinating journey as he brings the composer of West Side Story, Candide, Mass and more to life.

Attending a performance at The Laguna Playhouse is not just another night out. One of the attractive elements about seeing a Playhouse performance is that patrons can enjoy a sumptuous lunch or dinner in Laguna Beach and then take a picturesque stroll to the Moulton Theater for world-class entertainment. Numerous dining options abound in Laguna, making it the perfect destination to share with friends, family or that special someone.

Fall Gardening Tips

Fall Gardening Tips from Laguna Nursery
By Ruben Flores

For those of us who reside along the coast, summer has left us wondering if we actually had one. With June gloom, July grey skies and “Fogust” behind us, we’re all looking forward to beautiful fall weather and blooming gardens.

This time of the year is ideal for planting and there are several tricks that will allow your garden to thrive and flourish. As with most things, it comes down to basic preparation and a willingness to dig in.

Tackle the soil first. In gardening, fertilizing is the key to healthy plants. Just as you would supplement your diet with daily vitamins, fertilizers provide a natural boost to plants. We recommend organic products because they are absorbed slowly each day. A well-balanced concoction of bone meal, blood meal and cottonseed meal will have your garden green and growing in as short as a month.

Now is the time to mulch. The addition of compost or a wood-based product reduces weed growth and keeps moisture in. It’s as simple and easy as spreading bags of your favorite mix to a 1” thick layer throughout your garden. Happier plants and less weed pulling will be your future!

Choose plant specimens that are indigenous to the area. Why fight Mother Nature when you don’t have to? Our local area is home to countless specimens of plants that thrive naturally with little care. Ceanothus, Salvia, Thyme, Manzanita, Cistus, Boxwood, Lavender, Rosemary, Phlomis, Bougainvillea, and Wisteria are just a few of the beautiful California natives, succulents and drought tolerant options to select from.

Seek advice from professional. Stop by Laguna Nursery and ask one of our sales assistants to answer your questions. Whether you need information about plant selection, soil amendment or want to redesign your entire garden, we’re here to help. We’re located at 1370 South Coast Highway in Laguna Beach.
