Capistrano Unified School District’s independent study program has a refreshed look and a strategic vision to start the 2026-27 school year, as well as a new name: South County Virtual Academy.

South County Virtual Academy offers middle and high school students the benefits and flexibility of a virtual curriculum in addition to in-person instruction with highly qualified CUSD teachers. The school’s mission is to provide interactive, media-rich educational opportunities in a flexible, student-centered environment that will prepare students to be globally competitive citizens by expanding their educational opportunities while developing essential 21st-century skills.

South County Virtual Academy has developed two new programs to support the needs of middle and high school students:

• Elite Performance Academy:
A free public school program for performance-focused students in grades 6-8, with an additional “High School Prep” year available for develop-ment. Students complete independent study with support from credentialed CUSD teachers and have flexible scheduling to accommodate training, practice, performance and travel. Performance training sessions, focused on strength, conditioning, agility and speed, are offered throughout the week with a certified coach.

• Middle College:
A hybrid high school independent study program providing the opportunity to take free courses at Saddleback College that also apply towards graduation credit. This program gives students a strong head start, with the potential to earn an associate degree, complete all Cal GETC general education requirements, or earn a career-focused certificate before graduating from high school.
