Closet Crush
By Krissy V.

Hung up on a messy closet? Then make a date to turn your nightmare into a dream with an organized, functional and stylish space.

Every girl wishes for a closet with perfectly hung clothes, beautifully displayed shoes and storage options galore. The thought of scouring for one more matching shoe compelled me to finally tackle my own closet makeover. I started by perusing photos of celebrity and mere mortal closets online, where I quickly got a sense of how I wanted mine to function and feel. Once I processed the fact that I didn’t have a condo-sized space to work with, I made a list of the must-haves and love-to-haves that were realistic for my project.

I then contacted several companies for in-home design consultations and quotes. After meeting with John Washer, owner of Irvine-based Cabinets Plus, I knew I’d found the perfect match for the job. Not only did his 20 years of experience in the industry and competitive pricing win me over, but the local manufacturing facility and showroom allowed me to see and touch their products firsthand and offered me loads of design inspiration. John also knew how to maximize my (oh yeah, and my husband’s) limited space and he provided me with creative solutions for several design dilemmas.

Laying my eyes on my new custom closet was love at first sight! I couldn’t be more thrilled with the final outcome and with Cabinets Plus for taking my vision and making it a reality. Organizationally Challenged?
Before you meet with a pro, search through books, magazines and online for your closet crush. Making decisions on cabinet styles, finishes and other options will be that much easier if you’ve narrowed the field before your design consultation.

The Big Picture.
Treat your closet like any other room in your home and impart your personal style. Whether you’re featuring a fabulous rug, a sparkling chandelier or installing hardware that might normally be reserved for a fine piece of furniture, make it an area you’ll fall in love with each day.

Address The Mess.
No, really…the 80’s are calling for their Dr. Martens and Wham t-shirt! De-clutter before you start designing to accurately assess and maximize your storage needs. If it’s not a timeless classic or you haven’t worn it in a year, surrender it to the Goodwill.

Bells And Whistles.
Don’t blow the opportunity to put your signature stamp on the space. Your walk-in’s wow factor hinges on the details. Jewelry organizers, valet pull-outs, slide out belt and tie bars, built-in hampers and ironing centers will instantly take your closet from drab to fab.

No Wire Hangers!
Let Mommy Dearest rest in peace and purchase matching hangers to create a uniform, clean look. Non-slip, velvet versions might cost a few bucks more, but will be a great investment in the long run.

Take A Load Off.
If space permits, dedicate a corner or center island to seating where you can ponder the fashion statement of the day. A funky, upholstered chair or bench can add a pop of color and a bit of fun to the space.

A Reflection On You.
Adding a full length mirror or mirrored doors will make your closet appear larger and will allow you to avert potential fashion faux pas.

Material Matters.
Not all companies are equal when it comes to quality and customer service. Make sure you’re comparing apples to apples when it comes to products and installation methods. Ask questions up front to avoid disappointments down the road.
